Fungal Toenail Infection

I have a fungal nail infection in my big toe (diagnosed by doc last September) and have been using one of those paint on solutions (used twice a week, stays put until you use wipes to remove it). Seems to be working, there's new nail coming through at the bottom and it's white rather than the horrible yellow/grey/black on the infected part.

I know they say it can take up to a year but what is meant to happen? Does it just grow out? At the moment the infected bit is starting to crack and split slightly and it feels very loose. I can wiggle it about a bit (makes me feel sick!) and it appears as if it might easily come off. Is that meant to happen? It covers 3/4 of the nail so if that bit came off I'd be left with barely anything. Is that dangerous (so to speak!)?

I have been using it for nearly a year now, but was told only once a week. The bad part of the nail crumbles away every so often as it nears the tip. I keep it short cutting it as soon as possible, but don't forget to clean scissors so not to spread it.

I probably made up the twice a week bit as I got impatient! Went back and saw another doc and when I went to get prescription it's a different thing. This one you paint on every 12 hours. It doesn't say whether you need to clean the nail before applying more. Any ideas? Would have preferred the same but seems I've ended up with something different!

Yes mines a bit crumbly at the top too. Any idea how the infection comes about in the first place? Thought I'd just banged my toe for ages then realised it wasn't going away and how disgusting it looked!
