shattered bone in ankle last september and had it rebuilt. now have a plate on side of leg and screw through anklebone. after nearly nine months i am walking reasonably well but considerable pain whentrying to sleep and turning on my side. surgeon has offererd to remove plate in three months (ie after twelve months) but is leaving the decision to me, has anyone had this experience and do they think the removal will make any difference. (I am in my seventies
Compound ankle fractures are "bu99ers" and to have pain after 12months is not unusual.
The plate will only be removed when there is reunion of the bone ends (not always achievable in these types of fractures) but if the surgeon is willing to remove the plate then union has taken place.
In my opinion, removing the plate will not improve the pain that
you are still getting and that pain may well need extensive physiotherapy.
I feel for you tooj.. ive got 2 screws in my ankle and a plate with 6 screws in same leg (( 3 breaks in one go LOL)).. can truly sympathise with the pain still.
