What does this mean? I have to ring back GP later but until then wondered if anyone could help! He is 19mths old and has been unwell, narky and not himself for 6 weeks now. He has been checked out by doc for the last 2 consecutive weeks and they cant find anything obviously wrong with him so asked me to do a urine sample. I gave it in yesterday and ketones were found so I was told to do it again when he had drunk more fluids. Did this and again the same has been found. Whats going on?

I will do. Of course I've done the dreaded google search on it and diabetes seems to come up. He hasnt got glucose showing up though because the GP told me that yesterday however he has been drinking a lot more (but obviously this could be warmer weather), is very irritable and did have nappy rash that wouldnt heal for ages even with prescribed cream sometime back. Am I reading too much into this lol?!
Ketones appear in urine when the body is starved of food. It shows that the body is using more calories than it is taking in.

In fact on the Atkins diet you look for ketons to make sure you are loosing weight.
Question Author
Yes but he is 19 mths old and definitely not on the Atkins diet lol! Seriously though I remember reading about this as I had a very quick phase of doing this diet many years ago and the ketones give you bad breath. This is exactly what he has and he is snoring very loudly which I have no idea if this is connected.

update - took the 3rd sample after a meal and it was fine hurrah! You were right guys, the doc said it was because he had not being eating well.
