i´ve tried marmite, garlic, and now a special spray, to no effect, got bitten 20 times last night and the 2 previous nights. it not so much the pain of the bites, but the constant loud buzzzing noise i have to put up with all night.
i´m now going to look for something with deet in it, and see if this helps. :(

What did you do with the marmite and garlic eat it or smear it on your skin?

The main diet of mosquitos is nectar! Only male mosquitos make the buzzing noise, and they don't bite! Female mosquitoes bite to obtain blood, which results in more eggs and stronger offspring. The flight of females is silent. Avon Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil is an effective repellent, used by those in the know. Deet is nasty stuff - it'll melt the plastic on your sunglasses and camera.
All effective repellents have the same thing in them whether it`s Jungle Formula, Avon etc. DEET is the most effective. Check out different concentrations in different products. Then there`s Picaridin - doesn`t melt your tights like DEET and you can put it on your face. Then theres Merck`s IR3535. That`s in Avon and Boots. I like R3535. It`s whatever works for you and where you want to spray it really.
As micmac says - try one of those plug-in things. I've been plagued by mosquitos for four years, since I moved, and this summer I found the plug-in thing. You put a tablet in it every day or two (I find one lasts two nights) and lo and behold, no bites. Wonderful! And better than spraying yourself with stuff every night, which smells horrible and doesn't stop them getting at the bits you missed. However, my tablets warn me that they're poisonous for fish, so don't use them in the vicinity if you have a fishtank.
I live in an area which has many mossies. The biting thing all depends on the individual. Everyone gets bitten but some don't react. Friends of mine use the Avon product. It works for some but not for others. As I say, they all get bit but some don't react. Be careful with deet. Keep it away from pregnant people.
If they are in your room, then shut all doors and windows and any fly spray will do the trick. You really need to do this at least 3 hours before sleeping in the room.

thanx 4 all your suggestions. it seems to be trial &error. will have to search for that avon stuff, but not sure it will work.wouldnt have normally thought about using the fly spray, but will give it a go tonight. used a fly repellent lotion last night, it had to be applied to all my exposed skin areas, it said on the bottle that it lasts for 8 hrs, but to wash your hands after using it, it seems to have worked. and it didnt contain deet.
