I normally fight them off this time of year but this has lingered for about two weeks. Doctors would be last resort. ta

Hmm for a cough that's lasted 2 weeks I personally, would advise your GP
i never buy cough medicine believing it to be a waste of money and preferring the cough/cold to get rid of itself naturally. however, last year i had a lingering dry tickly cough and was at my wits end with it. my niece, a trainee gp, recommended boots pholcodine linctus which worked a treat. whilst it's not a home remedy, it's very cheap (unlike branded medicines) and really did work. highly recommended.

ta will give it a GO
It worked because pholcodine is a cough suppressant, it wont however, cure the cough because, as you say, none of the cough medicines do work, they are little more than placebo's

Don't use pholcodine if your cough turns phlemgy/chesty though - never suppress a chesty cough
what will help your throat is hot honey, lemon and ginger if you have any.
is it just a cough - no gung or junk ,runny nose etc? if so try taking codine tablets thats what the doctor gives me to shift a persistant cough after a cold...beleive me it works and when you read the packet it tells you its good to stop coughs.
