Well I have been thinking.......as I am in my early 70's, I find an inclination to become more of a hermit, having little or minimum contact with groups, or not wanting to become a member of "group" such as thouse, , which require membership, I am more comfortable with only one or two persons for communication.

By what I have read this is an unhealthy habit, but I say it is what I prefer and if I do anything else I am uncomfortable and I feel I would be faking it if I acted any other way.

Is there any one else who has experienced this? Am I the only one who wishes to become a hermit of some sort? Or are all the other AB'er young chickens who have never thought about it? Older persons, please only reply?

I have no wish to go out and join in things and make new friends. I am happy with my existing circle of friends and quite content to jog along..........

I see, thank you for responding, the only problem is that for me, my existing circle of friends for some reason are mostly older than me and they are slowly peeling off and meeting their maker....so I guess sooner or later i will be a hermit for sure.
I'm not old...but I have old family members...does that count?

Oh sure, ummmmmm, ask them for their secrets for remaining happy, I think gad-a-bouts are probably happier. You can ascertain my conclusion.

Sounds like a plan to me.
nohorn I can go for days without speaking to anyone, it doesn't matter as I am quite happy in my own company, and I have Space Cadet to keep me warm.
nohorn...I find at 60 I an much the same....groups can be a mixed bag so I tend to stick to tried and tested people....a small group of friends works best....and as they die off or disappear that leaves a vacancy that I can fill...lol

Yes Razzle, good idea and then replace them with a cat or dog? Good idea
well a cat or a dog is good but I find that a tin of salmon can be as good...less work and if you have a good imagination.....just as affectionate...lol
Well nohorn....I'm 38...and my ambition is to be a hermit :-)

It's never going to happen...but we can dream :-)

It's your life....do what you want.
i dont think its particularly healthy to be a true hermit... but you dont really mean a true hermit - that would imply total solitude...you mean just spending more time alone than with others...

there is nothing wrong with enjoying being alone - but its very different from being lonely...

i would suggets you keep your options open though...
I have a large family and am in my early sixties ..pushing 64 .
I moan at times that my offspring ,siblings et al are always on the phone ,popping in etc .But I'm a bit gregarious .I couldn't be stuck alone with nobody to talk to .I like company .
No ..sorry I couldn't become a hermit :)

Mind you I saw my Mum and Ma in law become a bit like this as they were both widowed and then their circle of friends gradually left this mortal coil .They both lived to a ripe old age and this is where the hermit bit kicks in .
Have you got kids/grandkids nohorn?
nohorn,

You are not on your own.

I would never go to the local Day Centre in my small town for old folks as it would make me feel older than I am, I am 67.

I am quite happy at home on my PC, TV and daily paper etc and minding my own business. I have no interest to reflect on how it was in the old days, whats the point.

There is a local Millionaire in my town who provides an Xmas dinner every year for about 500 pensioners.
Its not really my scene but it helps others who have no family's.
Yes apart from those dreadful day centres there is little to bring older people together.....perhaps we need something like youth clubs..etc....I'm not one for an afternoon tea dance myself...

To answer ummmmm, I am most fortunate I have two grown children who fight over me, they are both accomplished professionals so I could visit with them whenever. No grandchildren, nor do i want any....the world is in too much of a mess.

I guess I do enjoy my own company and I love siimplicity, no complications, and love to read, read. in peace and quite. I detest TV but I put up with it because of my spouse, he loves football games.
I am 77 and have a wonderful wife to keep me on my toes, and not vegetate. Have a Happy Xmas anyway.
I'm fairly hermit like. I only ever see my other half, our son and occasionally my daughters (and grandchildren) and my other half's son. I can't remember the last time I even left my house (I'm disabled).
I'm probably not classed as one of the 'older persons' you specified must be the only ones to answer though as I'm 43.
