Hi

I have a really big day coming up where I'm going to be the centre of attention and have to talk in front of a lot of people........which I am not used to.

I am going to see my GP about it, but before hand I thought I'd ask on here to see if there is any prescribed medication around to give you confidence......or to give you an 'i don't care attitude' if that makes sense..........or am i just clutching at straws here?

many thanks

Some people would suggest alcohol, but the best I can come up with is Kalms tablets.

A herbal preparation, which is probably just psychological, but many feel it helps them.
I'm actually struggling to believe that your are going to waste your GP's time with this.
Incredible
Bachs Rescue Remedy
or an alternative that some folk say works is to imagine your audience are all simpletons or even naked :-)
Paper Bag - no really ...

... find a quiet place and breathe in/out of a paper bag for several deep breaths (or as long as you can stand it) - cranks up the CO2 in the blood & calms the fight/flight mechanism for a while.

DO NOT use a polythene bag - that is very dangerous !!

Ignore baz's unhelpful interjection - anyone who has ever had a crippling anxiety attack will understand exactly where you are coming from.
my friend uses rescue remedy,
A bit OTT Dave. I see no reference to crippling panic attacks.

Your suggestion has more to do with overcoming hyperventilation, and I think is more likely to increase the pressure Bob feels.

I would have thought that sitting quietly beforehand, listening to calming music was a better idea.
Hi there I know exactly what it is like. Baz is very hard and unsympathetic. I struggle with anxiety attacks and I was prescribed propanalol it really takes the edge off things and is non addictive it is a betablocker but taken in a mild dose it can really help just calm things down.
Bach's rescue remedy -workis on humans and animals - you can get pastilles or drops you put under your tongue a few minutes before the anxious moments. i've used it myself when competing and on horses a bit nervy or young horses - I even gave some to someones horse at an event as they were having trouble loading the animal back into its wagon - and after a few minutes it walkded calmy in - its not going to make you 'Mr Confidence' but will stop some of the physical sighns of anxiety.
I'd also agree with propanolol. The herbal things don't really touch real nerves. I have them and they are excellent for adrenaline inducing situations like public speaking, tests etc (but not so good for anxiety that's more in the mind) and have no side efects (on me anyway).
i personally think you would be better off talking to someone who does this and will give you tips on overcoming your fears
Prepare well in advance. Remember - to fail to prepare, is to prepare to fail
Remember the 5 Ps
Perfect preparation prevents p(sspoor performance
Face the fear and do it anyway
Obviously none of you have had to stand up in front of people with your knees literally knocking (for DT) and mouth so dry that words won't come out and a feeling of panic washing over you - no amount of preparation stops that if you are that type of person.
Prudie, please don't presume!
OK tenrec but that was based on experiences I've had giving presentations and preparation and facing it didn't help - I was in such a state I couldn't read my notes anyway.
If you can, make sure you know what you're going to say. Breathing exercises might help you relax.
