Sqad can you advise please.

Sqad my daughter 23 had septoplasty and some of her sinuses cleaned 8 weeks ago. She has been in awful pain since. So far she has had cefuroxime, doxycycline x2 courses, cefalexin and now oxytetracycline. She is allergic to penicillin and clarithromycin. Otravine nasal spray straight after op and Sterimar. Is now on Nasonex with Otravine again for a week then a week off then back on it for another week etc. On prednisilone as her chest is bad (asthmatic and prone to chest infections and pleurisy) 3rd course. Has been taking cocodamol 30/500 and GP now given her meptazinol for pain. Saw ENT for review 2 weeks ago and the dr cleared some pus from her nose, said the op had gone well, prescribed the Nasonex and a bicarb wash and said they would see her again in 6 weeks.
She is so poorly, pain so bad in her face, cannot work, not even able to look after her little boy. Is this common after the op she had? Was only in for the day. No sense of smell or taste either. Any advice gratefully received.

OH had a septoplasty five years ago - he had painkillers for a few days, now he has only a regular prescription for Nasonex. I'd go back to the consultant if I were you, this doesn't sound right to me at all.

I was thinking of ringing ENT in the morning boxtops as her next appt is 30th Aug. She was in so much pain when she saw them 2 weeks ago. GP has been good but they are running out of options. She was in two minds about the op but was told if she could breathe better her asthma would improve.

SMP......,a Septoplasty is not usually a painful procedure and certainly not associated with "awful pain."

If she had a review 2 weeks ago and she was seen by the Consultant, then the two common "painful" post operative complications of septal haematoma and septal abscess can be excluded.
These are the main complications of the operation.

I cannot think of any reason why she should have so much pain after this straightforward surgical procedure.

I would suggest that she rings the ENT secretary and gets an appointment to see the Consultant( and make sure it IS the consultant)

I would be very interested in any feedback.

Quick update, rang secretary yesterday, she put me through to ward. Clerk suggested asking GP to send my daughter in as an emergency but would have had to have waited until end of surgery for GP to ring so she said go to A+E and my daughter could be seen by ENT there. So off we go only to find A55 (North Wales) closed due to tanker overturning spilling diesel. Tried alternative route, total gridlock, no diversions in place so had to crawl back home over 3 hours driving for a trip that should have taken half an hour. Only good thing daughter slept in the car, first good sleep in ages (reminded me of when she was a baby). Going to see how she is today.
