Any Abers (male of course) had there Prostate removed and would like to share their experience.I'm off to Thornbury hospital next week for a consultation and hopefully op shortly afterwards.I have to decide which i prefer a spinal injection or anaesthetic.

It may not have to be removed. If detected early the implanted pellets can keep it under control.

Had my prostate removed two years ago due to cancer and was fortunate enough to have Robotic surgery (DaVinci method - you can Google it). Went into hospital on the Monday am, op in the pm, home on Wednesday lunchtime. The surgeon came to see me on the Tues morning and said I could go home then or stay another night - I opted for the extra night. No major pain to mention just discomfort. (I had GA by the way). Having the robotic surgery decreases the chance of loss of erection and incontinence, however, I had minor incontinence for a couple of weeks but nothing to write home about.All ok now. I had to have 7 weeks of radiotherapy in Jan/Feb of last year as my PSA reading was 0.3 after the op, not 0.0 as they wanted. I still see the Urologist and oncologist twice a year for check ups (My PSA before surgery was 13.9 !!) Apart from what I've said everything is fine and I have no regrets whatsoever. Hope all goes well and if you want any more info etc just re-post on here - I'll keep an eye out.

my father died of prostate cancer .... i'm tested annually for the early signs so it can be arrested.

i do not have the knowledge to advise on the best anaesthetic to have -- i want merely to wish you the very best in what you are about to go through.

you will have my thoughts ....

Thank you for your replies.Fortunately I dont have prostate cancer but it's enlarged enough to cause great discomfort.I'm having a TURP operation next Wednesday and I have decided not to have the spinal injection.Been told to expect a two night stay.

Just to wish you well with the Turp op. I wasn't a "suitable candidate" for this procedure but have no regrets.

i concur.

it's a relief that cancer is not present - however, good luck with the procedure to arrest the enlargement.

Turp may need to repeated .My husband had prostate trouble some years ago .
But it enlarged again and he had to have another op .Non cancerous though .

It is a routine procedure and shouldn't have to be repeated, the main problem being bleeding from the penis, which may be painful initially for about 2 weeks.
The catheter will come out on the second day.

If it was malignant to would not be having a TUR Prostate removal.

Personally i would have chosen spinal with sedation, but the alternative is just as good.

mike.......my response was the post of Shaneystar.

TUR which i assume that you had does not remove ALL the prostate, that was done by the old method of Millin's Prostatectomy ot suprapubic prostratectomy....opening the stomach.

There are 3 bits to a prostate, two lateral lobes and a middle lobe and it is the latter that tends to become enlarged and is removed by TUR

Well I don't know what happened to my old man then .
He had a prostate op back in 2001 .All fine until his anal cancer .After that op he couldn't pee so once the cancer op settled down they had him back in and gave him another op for prostate trouble .It's still not right and he has to attend urology on a regular basis for flow doings and whatnot and may still need another operation .The poor bugger had a catheter for nearly a year .

It is unusual Sqad ..he had one of the best surgeons ,privately at St Anthonys in North Cheam in the first place .
I can't understand it either .In spite of the fact he has all clear on the cancer (so far ) this piddle business is having a big effect on his quality of life .

Just had the mail delivered which included the invoice for my op,don't waste any time do they,also it is to be paid in full before the op. Received the initial consultants bill before leaving the hospital last Wednesday.Good job the holiday is A/I and paid for.
