Getting toenail removed tomorrow morning... eek!

I'm dreading it, as the doctor said that the local anaesthetic injections are quite painful. Obviously I know won't feel anything after that but I'm less concerned with the pain and more the fact that I'm squeamish... thinking about taking a book to read and just telling him to get on with it ha!

Anyway, anyone had it done and know if I have to go back for a dressing change at all? My mum mentioned this but I didn't think I did? Also how long will it be sore/painful for? I work in a busy bar at weekends, so am on my feet running around all night and hoping I don't need to take the weekend off!

hello mermaid.

is he removing just the nail .. or taking out the niail bed aswell?
(removing the nail bed stops the nails growing again)

i had the nails on my big toes - plus the nail beds removed .. one at a time of course .. back in the early eighties.
on each occasion i was in a wheelchair with my bandaged foot elevated for about a week.

i'm not sure how having just the nail only removed will affect you.

i regret to say there will be pain when the anasthetic wears off.

I was expecting to be driving, right as rain the next day ha?

I'm just having the nail removed for now, it was badly damaged when someone stood on it in a stiletto a few years ago, but has recently been getting infected/ingrown etc. If it doesn't grow back healthy/less deformed I'll be having the nail bed out too. =(

Hi Mermaid.

The initial local injection does sting but once over that it very quickly numbs. I've had a few over the years in many delicate places!

My daughter has had both her nails and nail bed removed on her big toes due to ingrowing toenails. (done separately) Couple of days with the leg elevated and the dressing taken off later that day. They sent me away with dressings so that I could change them myself. Healed very quickly. One tip, take some open toe sandals with you when you go. They are handy to wear afterwards. Just make sure no-one treads on them whilst they are healing.

Hello, all done!

Like you say, the injections did sting a fair bit, but nothing that isn't manageable.

I actually took a big magazine didn't watch a thing! Will be relaxing with it up the rest of the day I think, and see how it feels tomorrow- it's still quite numb at the moment. Also have to go in for a dressing change on Friday.

Easy as that! Hopefully it grows back flat, as the nail bed was damaged. Doctor said he cleaned it up as much as poss but if it doesn't I'll be back to have the nail bed gone as well. Fingers crossed this does the trick though!

pmsl @ excelsior...............I had the nail and nail bed removed, and went to work the next day. I couldn't have if I worked in a busy bar, as I'd be too scared someone trod on my toe.

Are they removing the entire nail? My ex had terrible problems with ingrowing nails and at first the dr would just remove a section - he'd cut out a kind of v shape in the middle to relieve the sides where it was digging into the flesh. He also had the full nails and nail beds removed later. The section bit was a lot easier - he was a bit sore but he wasn't out of action at all.

Dancing definitely out of the picture for a little while at least.... if only it was fashionable to wear steel toe cap boots out and about!

karenmac- They got rid of the whole nail, as it was not only getting infected but was also raised quite a bit where the nail bed was damaged, which made wearing most shoes aside from trainers really uncomfortable.

ratter- Not even watching that video- sorry! I didn't watch it at all but according to my poor mister (who looked like he was going to faint!) they did some slicing/digging about underneath with a scalpel type thing and then basically pulled it off with what he described as 'pliers'. Oh so glad I took the magazine now!

In recent years both my big toes have suffered major trauma requiring nail removal. Whilst the local anaesthetic was not too bad the nail removal was painless. Problem is that the nail bed has been damaged and the slightest bash causes the nail to drop off.

Oh my gawd!!! I have two nails, (left thumb, and marriage finger)that look the same as yours, and now I`m wondering what to do. Should I Sue the Jeweller whom removed my wedding ring or just hope it will get better itself?
My thumbnail just got slammed in the car door, Ouchh *+1!!$%&^><
