My aunt (68) has had a bad back for around a year. Her mobility decreased over this period so she could barely walk. GP insisted it was sciatica. Anyway, she had an MRI scan last week and she has been diagnosed with a tumour on her kidney - apparently this has spread to her spine. This is all we know. She is now in hospital awaiting further tests.

Any ideas - particularly Sqad? It doesn't sound too hopeful.

Not very tasteful but it did sort of catch my eye. Hopefully Sqad will be along with a more helpful response

lol jno - it was badly phrased. I meant "Sqad, I could do with some bedside reassurance from you on a kidney tumour issue".

I'm an idiot.

Thanks both of you for trying to keep it on top though, I imagine the good doctor has gone to his silken sheeted bed!
Oi!...don't forget that we are one hour ahead in the Balearics and although I have devoted my life to the kindly, lovable and deeply understanding folks of AB....I do need some.....erm......bedtime...;-)

Well, no.....it doesn't sound too good......and as usual it depends upon what type of malignancy it is..........and naturally she will need a biopsy.

Almost all are now called Renal Cell Cancer ( I hate the modern bloody terminology...we called them Hypernephromas)....there are other types, but extremely rare. The hypernephromas are divided into histological groups which dictates treatment and prognosis.

Treatment is usually surgery or radiotherapy...chemotherapy tends not to be an efficient method of treatment.

NOW....after p1ssing you off with cancer pessimism........this type of tumour, even though it has spread to the spine does react well to treatment....either nephrectomy and OR immunotherapy...and I would say...don't hold me to this........but auntie has more than a 50/50 chance of being alive in 5 years time.

If there is a cancer that one would choose (indeed if one would CHOOSE any)...then kidney cancer might be a good choice.

Keep me informed.
