My Mother Suffers From Chronic Catarrh, Can Anyone Recommend Something

My mother suffers from chronic catarrh, it is so bad sometimes that she wakes in the night and is sick, she has to keep blowing her nose to breath, then other times her nose won't stop running. Sometimes she has a cough and feels sick and has a horrible taste in her mouth. She went to her doctor and he gave her a nasal spray but it made no difference. She also tried inhaling steam from a bowl. So I wondered if anyone could recommend something, an over the counter remedy, a herbal remedy or a lozenge, something that maybe has worked for them.

No...so forget that approach.

She needs referral to an ENT surgeon for assessment.

if she can deal with it, sterimar spray is brilliant for clearing the sinusses. By "Chronic" do you mean "awful" or "longstanding" if it has been going on for more than a week or so, I would be back to the doc for more investigation before going the home remedy route

A friend of mine had this. She gave up butter, cheese and full fat milk. That was years ago and she's never had the problem since.

potters catarrh pastilles (not used them myself but used to sell lots in my chemist days)

I have used the potters cattarrh pastiles when I have had a cold and they are very good , but if this is something long term I would asked to be referred to the ENT Dept

Don't think there are many qualified GPs on this site. Perhaps a visit to your mother's would be more appropriate.

This may sound a bit wacky...but does she eat a lot of dairy produce? I found that by cutting down on cow's milk, cheese etc. the catarrh produced was significantly less. I would vote for Sterimar too. It is quite disgusting sniffing it up, and also fairly expensive. You can make the same thing with warm boiled water and a little salt. Don't make it too salty though! Good luck to your mum It is miserable having this problem.
