What Is Causing My Tiredness ?
85 Answers
Taking tabs as doctor said I was low on iron, but my tiredness is extreme at the moment, everything is an effort. Nothing showed up on tests at the doctors. I sleep soundly at night for about 7-8 hours and have a sleep in the afternoon as well, but I am tired all the time

Have you had your thyroid checked? an under-active thyroid causes severe tiredness. If left untreated, physical symptoms become evident, including thickening and roughening of the skin, loss of body hair, weight gain and confusion. Odd things also, like uncontrollable tears (if the lumpiness of the facial skin blocks the tear ducts) and pain in the hand as the nerves get squashed. It is easily and quickly treated by thyroxine tablets.
Our dear Sqad has addressed statements/questions to me. I'll deal with each separately - I queried tamaris's B12 status.
Sqad: "B12 deficiency would show up on the blood film..it didn't".
Well...(i) tamaris has not said she had such a blood-film test.
(ii) If B12 status was determined it would surely be done via serum measurement as this is almost certainly now done by automated analysis in the routine clinical lab.
Besides I do not know how B12 - specificically - can be determined on a blood film. I am curious to know how. Seriously, not at all sarcastically, please educate us on this aspect of Sqad. Over to you.
Kindest regards.

B12 is needed for NORMAL red cell formation and if B12 is deficient......the red cells are not normal and this can be seen on a normal blood specimen.
In B12 deiciency...the Hb is low.......the red cells are LARGE and the reticulocte count is low........the marrow is just not making enough young reticulocytes.
Diagnosis B12 deficiency....Pernicious anaemia.
\\\\Nothing showed up on tests at the doctors.\\ These would be invariably blood tests.......and routine.....and would give a clue to the type of anaemia.

Sqad's Point 2: "She doesn't need B12 (blood film) and doctor is giving iron by mouth...standard treatment"
I was not at all recommending B12 supplementation just diagnosis of her B12 status, see above. It would be irresponible of anyone to recommend such self-medication outside of the doctor's advice.
However an interim course of iron supplementation seemed sensible and safe until the doctor acted. Note, my comments were made before tamaris revealed she was being prescribed oral iron.
I mentioned Feroglobulin as an example of OTC supplement not as a recommendation and not because this example contains B12 - it does read badly though in retrospect.
A cautionary rider to all: excess iron intake is dangerous and can lead to iron-overload. It's common in Africa where they brew their booze in iron vessels.

Oh,.. ty Sqad, on your response re: point 1 while I was writing about your point 2. I am well aware of the role of B12 and the life cycle of the red blood cell but it should help others. Modern local doctors' clinics do not do histological analyses, their nurse takes a bood sample and send it to the local hospital clinical laboratory. So much for your blood film analysis which probably never existed, lol.

O.K. Round 3 coming up but it may be tomorrow. I just request that if Sqad eventually lands a knockout blow it is seen by all in slow motion & black and white. Also it is accompanied by the music "Intermezzo from Cavaliera Rusticana" a la "Raging Bull".
I thought that was funny even if no-one else did!
Lol.

My statement "typical doctor here, treatment with tabs before in-depth diagnosis" was countered by Sqad: "You have had a lot of experience with 'typical Drs' have you?" My answer now:
Yes real ones - PhD's (scientists) but no extensive experience with my own GPs (MB's we call Dr), lol..
I based my statement on decades of talking to friends and relatives and to a lesser extent my own experiences. So often I have heard people complain about their problems remaining although receiving drugs. When I have asked what exactly IS the diagnosis i.e. what's wrong with your body? - they have said that they didn't know.
To clarify, I have great respect for medical doctors in general but warn against those many who write precriptions precipitately but do not follow the matter up. I have known people who have given up and accepted the discomfort/pain because the doctor has not pursued their problem after the first (fair-enough) prescription.
In fairness, I withdraw the word "typical" Sqad et al as Drs are getting much better these days. OK?
Kind Regards,
