Partial Denture
21 Answers
Well have finally made it (somewhat).
Had 3 back teeth extracted 3 weeks ago and 4 front teeth out today and a temporary partial denture inserted.
I know it is early days or hours but denture just feels like a big blub of hard blu-tac.
My next appointment is 6 months time and I have to make a decision re
1. Permanent denture
2. Implants
She (dentist) has also told me she wants to remove 7 fillings to improve my bite (do not want this done) and also told me that my veins are very poor to give me IV-sedation which I did get done with the first back teeth with difficulty.
At the moment I think I will be swaying towards permanent denture as implants seem to be a lot of work and maybe more pain.
Anyway I know I will feel a bit funny when I have to take these partial ones out - can I keep them in for a few days or more.
Should I expect pain as they bed down and have to go back to the dentist for adjustment or can I expect them to be okay.
Thanks for any of your experiences. JjCon

What do you mean by this, JJ?
I have a partial denture for my top row of teeth. I take it out to clean it, night and morning and, sleep with it in. I use Fixodent during the day to make sure it stays in place. No problem. It will take some time to get used to but it'll be fine.

Speaking as one who has had an upper denture for over sixty years, I confirm it will feel awkward at first, and will take time to bed down, and yes may need adjustment although I've never found this so (i.e. they fit first time). Mine last between 5 and 10 years before replacement needed owing to mouth changes (or occasionally a tooth added). One of mine was a titanium one (much more expensive) and I share Fusion5's view, I'm now on plastic again and am contemplating upgrading to titanium next time I need a refit.
Difficult to clarify without pics, but I'll try. The plastic one consists of teeth on edge of plastic mould which fits the roof of my mouth. The metal one had the centre part of the roof missing (so I guess could be described/seen as a ring), and also a couple of hooks which went round two existing teeth. This left the roof of my mouth free from obstruction which is more comfortable. Mind you, I only had one tooth on the metal plate, I now have 6 so I'm uncertain as to what difference that would make. I do think the metal one was marginally more secure, not sure why. It also seemed lighter - probably because the plate was thinner which of course adds to the comfort.
Further to my previous post, after some surfing, the first picture on this link is closest to what I had - except that I just had a single tooth at the front.

Thanks Canary and others for going to the trouble to get pics.
Denture fell out a bit this a.m but put on a tiny bit of fixodent - seems to be okay at the moment. Am determined to sleep with it in as my mother never took hers out only to clean them.
Must say at last I can drink water, tea milk without the horrendous sensitivity that I have had for seems like years.
