Diabetes

My deceased brother's girlfriend is quite a chronic diabetic but some years ago she stopped going out with brother socialising as she said she could not get a "buzz" from alcohol so knew brother was wasting his money.
Anyway last week her twin siblings were 50 years old and she said she drank for the first time in years 10 gin and tonics and did not get even a buzz - I find it absolutely unbelievable but I know she wouldn't tell a lie. She said everybody around were drunk and this and that. Anybody tell me how can this be.

I have in the past drank a whole decent bottle of wine at lunch in two hours and that has never had any effect , was able to go back to work and do a good afternoons input, ( well you know what I mean ) I can know drink six to eight whiskies with no effect at all. My wife says it can't be any fun but I have never given it any thought. Not proud of the fact nor do I drink and drive etc as it can be a problem as never feel that I can't drive . Can be very tricky. I also have Diabetes, used to work in a pub in my early years and liked a drink but never been drunk.
thanks kjn - my god how is that - you couldn't ask your doctor as he would eat the a^se of her - she did drink at my brother's "bit of do" and drank like a fish and she was as sober as a judge. I find it utterly incredible. Bless her she is addicted to chocolate very badly and she is in very bad health. With so much weight can't walk much, eye sight going the lot that comes with neglect of looking after diabetes. But I drink myself but if it was 10 gin and tonic (which I dont like gin anyway) I would be hospitalised.
People do find it strange when we speak about it. I have been like this since my youth so know no different. I do wonder sometimes what it would feel like to get the buzz but am not prepared to see how much it would take to get that far. My diabetes is well under control ( thanks to me wife making me eat the right food). So pretty lucky there. One other thing I should mention is that as I get no buzz from alcohol I have found recently that I now tend to have non alcoholic drinks in pubs clubs etc, no point in paying three pounds plus for a pint of beer when a flavoured water taste just as good. I guess that's the positive point from this. Best rgds.
Perhaps off topic a bit but alcoholics very rarely get drunk as we know it. They are so used to drink they need an amount that would put most of us on our backs just to operate normally. A very close female friend of mine is a 'high functioning alcoholic' she needs 2 bottles of wine a day just to be able to appear normal. She is night manager of a care home and is very well thought of. But I know ( she has told me) that she does the night shift because it is easier to smuggle in the 2 bottles of wine she needs to complete a shift. She often comes to our house for breakfast after work, breakfast for her is 3 litres of strong cider! She comes to us to keep it from her partner who does not know the full extent of her problem.
