Fao Of Sqad Or Any Medics Please,

patient had a brain scan on 3rd Jan, + there have been many cock-ups with results, as she wasn't assigned a Neurologist at the time. She did manage to get the GP to read out what was on report sent to him. "small patch of subtle signal change and several small lesions) The patient Googled these terms, and straight away was taken to Multiple Sclerosis, which is what she had suspected, walking as if drunk, frequent falls for no obvious reason, bladder and sleep problems.
Patient received appointment with Neurology finally, for early April, but GP is going to try and expedite this.
Thoughts please?

Could be many things, but i would not argue with the conclusion of the patient..........she may well be spot on.

Yes.......there is a chance as Hodgkin's disease can affect the brain and nerves....but, a rank outsider........

Thanks sqad,...the patient has been told that Hodjkinsons is passed down by the male line of the family and it never skips a generation.....?

Not my area of expertise, but there is only a suggestion of inheritance with a certain type of lymphoma.
Still think that Hodgkins as a diagnosis is a rank outsider in this patient.

hc.....why? I'll have to have another scan, then learn results a couple of weeks earlier? Then have MS managed by NHS in the future? Or would I have to go private for follow up apptmnts?

Baths - just had a quick Google and apparently if you get a private diagnosis you will at some point be handed back to the NHS for ongoing treatment but as you say you would probably only gain a couple of weeks anyway. Hope this helps

You wouldn't have to have another scan. Your results can be forwarded to the consultant. When I was in a similar position 10 years ago I wasn't prepared to wait weeks and saw the same consultant privately within days of the NHS scan. He expedited my NHS treatment and I was admitted in to hospital under his care within a week. It cost me £100.

Sqad - I think Bathsheba may be thinking of Huntington's

take it from me - CNS lymphoma is very very unlikely.

or as Eichler puts it
A magnetic resonance (MR) image of the brain in patients with CNS lymphoma typically demonstrates one or more homogeneously enhancing lesions located in the periventricular white matter, characteristically spanning the corpus callosum.

PVL distribution is completely different to what Bathsbeba said were the changes seen on MRI...

diseases passed from father to son are virtually unknown - the Y chromosome doesnt carry much into as it is so small ( compared to the X ) - Huntingtons is genetic and passed to half the children but I will let Sqad take over on that as he is better as communication

surprisingly I find that in early onset Huntington;s which your fren' ALSO doesnt have - it is more likely to be inherited from the father ....

your fren really should have a family history of HD to make this get up and run - I cant find out the new mutation rate ( chance that your fren is the first case ) I think it is minute

Tell your fren to make as much trouble as possible
it sounds as tho the MRI service is technician only
and has no radiologist supervising
Sqad can burst a blood vessel over that one

[ I was allowed to walk around with a 15 cm tumour and 10 li ascites and the techies in CAT scan said - go to your GP it will take about six weeks and I said I could be dead at that time.....
and all I got was hand waving and "nothing to do with us"
and ALSO there is no doctor who can speak to you
When I said it was disgraceful they looked at the floor

and that boys and girls was Hope Hospital Salford whose chief exec David Dalton is currently screwing up the junior doctors negotiation ]
