After twisting my ankle badly 18 months ago I walked in pain for a year trying all kinds of treatments, had x-rays and MRI scans, finally a specialist sent me to a family-run orthopedic shoe maker who has made me a pair of (not very elegant) boots with a shaped sole insert and which hold the ankle rigid, as soon as I put them on the pain went in a couple of hours, I have been wearing them for 3 months and have been told I shall need to for at least another three.
Your doctor will advise, but if it's on the top of your foot it sounds as if one of your toe joints is affected, walking on it and flexing the joint will only exacerbate the problem. I think rest might be better for it until you get an expert opinion,
Diclofenac was great for removing the pain, but it had very bad side effects in my case - I started peeing blood clots OMG!, but I believe that's rare.
Good luck!
