She is 92 years of age and has "Bucked the trend",,," beaten the system" all without the help of statins and she could live another 4 or 5 years....or more.
Statins lower the blood cholesterol over a "LONG PERIOD" of time perhaps a decade or more, to cut down the incidence of heart disease and strokes.
Not all doctors agree....some saying that there is little evidence that a low blood cholesterol reduces the incidence of plaques in the arteries causing strokes or heart attacks.
Statins have side effects........some severe.....muscle pains, weakness, lethargy etc.
NOw.......would you take your fit 92 year old mother and chance those side effects for what could arguably be another day of life?
That's what medicine is all about......common sense, individuality and compassion, not links to websites.

Well I totally agree with sqad and found what he said was common sense and not in any way offensive. I also know what I am talking about re: statins as I am on them myself having hereditary high cholesterol. My mum died aged 92 and didn't want any form of medication at the end of her life as she had 'had enough'!
I am definitely not saying why bother at 92, it just seems to me that she has led a very healthy life two get to 92 and is till ok, she is never ill,, only colds and such. I agree with Sqad why give her things that can make her feel unwell! I shall be keeping a close eye on her. A person said to me, not another one, the doc get's paid for all those they get on statins, blood pressure and diabetes medication from the drug company, I do not know that this is so but who knows. My husband was given statins with a cholesterol level of 3.6, why -he had to stop taking them because of muscle cramps, but did he need them, he did not ask for them!
