I would absolutely take it if I was feeling that bad. Insomnia is a medical condition and any decent employer would realise that. Besides, if you have the note from your doctors, it doesn't really matter what your colleagues think does it.
it does not matter what your employer thinks its what your doctor has diagnosed and he has advised a period off work im sure he would not give out ins. certificates unless he felt you required it .
Yes! If the Doctor think you are ill enough to have a sick note, then that means you should not work for as long as the sick note is for. At least! If you are exhausted and not sleeping, you will only make yourself more ill if you continue to work. You are no good to your employer if you are feeling dreadful. Send in the sick note with someone so they can't "judge" your illness. They won't be able to defy a Doctor. Insomnia is an awful thing to have. Your body repairs and renews itself whilst you sleep and if you don't sleep, your body suffers terribly as a result.

This was a punishment in prisoner of war camps- not allowing prisoners to sleep! They would be poked with sticks in order to be kept awake. They eventually went insane as a result.

Have 2 weeks off and don't give work a second thought!!x
also an employer is not allowed to discuss with your work collegues what your doctor has written on your certificate, you only need tell your fellow employees what you wish. them to know . take the time from work and recharge your batteries and be good to yourself im sure you deserve it.... be well
Perfectly valid reason. Depending on what you do for a living, your condition could prove dangerous to you and to others.
as well as all the other answersi

i'm pretty sure as well that if you have been signed off you are not allowed to work until the date your docs says or if you go back to the docs and get signed back on, something to do with insurance i think
I once knew someone who had a sick note ofr 6 weeks for dyspepsia. Insomnia is far worse than indigestion.

Thank you all for your support ive lost so much sleep now i dont even no what day it is special thanks to ratter once again you have made me smile and to crete who helped with advice on my other post gypsy x
Insomnia is awful - I know because I sleep for about 3 hours a night. Your employer (or wages clerk) should not discuss your sick note with anyone. Your boss may ask you if you are feeling better but it's between him/her and you.

Ratter may have hit the nail on the head mentioning sleep apnoea. I am sure your doctor will diagnose the problem - but your reasons for being on sick leave are safe and will not be discussed in an office.
