Having read up and having some intelligence, Im reaching the conclusion that my young daughter has Tourette's Syndrome.

She grunts and flings her arms and legs about, and shrugs, but its been quite interesting to see how she masks this when in company so as not to look strange.

So, is there any point at all in going to the doctor to pursue a diagnosis? There is no treatment as far as I can see, and she is just getting on with it (the shrugging doesnt go down too well at school mind!).

What do you think - good to have a label or stay out of the system?!

My nephew has all the signs that he may be suffereing from tourettes but he has not been 'labeled' as yet. The doctors are looking at every possibility at the moment.

Personally if it was my son Id get him diagnosed and seek medical advice before relying on what i read up on on the net etc. If there was any possibility that it was something treatable thjen Id like to know that Id given him that chance of recovery.
I'm sure some tourettes sufferers take certain medication thats calms them down, depending on the severity of it. Read up on it first on net and see what you think then.
I think 4get is right.

If it were me I would get a diagnosis ~ not only will it put your mind at rest (self diagnosis isn't always a good thing) it means you can get all the advice you need, medication etc.

My daughter has Aspergers Syndrome, and although I knew this for a long time before diagnosis, it was the diagnosis itself that helped me begin to accept and understand the condition..hope that makes sense?
You should get the label as it will entitle you to some medical and financial assistance, not ideal but it will help

Thanks very much all.
you should def go to the doctors poor little thing will need to know herself that she isnt just being weird and that she isnt the only one there are support systems to help her understand it more
I'd also say best to get a professional diagnosis. It will help you and her in the future, as joro says, nice for her to know that its a medical condition she has not just her being different with no apparent reason. It will help her to make other kids understand what she's doing and why if she can explain it. I dont think its fair for you to just say, oh i think she has it, it needs properly diagnosing. I wish you and she all the very best and im sure there is some form of medication that might ease symptoms.
There is no such disease. It is mind over matter with these situations.
alfayed spy. there is such an illness. What makes you think you can announce it invalid?
Like I have said in my post above. Attention seeking and bad behaviour.
dont anyone rise to it.
Have you ever thought of taking other peoples opinions on board. Not necessarily agreeing but accepting that some poeple differ from yours?
if they backed it up with something then yes
Feed the troll, anyone? please don't :o)
Hi

I have a friend who's son has tourette's ( he is in his 20's now) and she was reluctant to go to the doctors. I think partly it was her own denial of the condition that stopped her going.

Once he was diagnosed.. he recieved extra help financially and also ... nore omportantly.. met other people with the condition. He learned that he was not a freak or stupid
