I have this thicker bit not on my stomach but around the waist area at the front I would like to know what type of exercise would get rid of it. I swim and do aqua-robics but nothing seems to make it go away.

Each person is born with 1000's and 1000's of fat storage cells and they simply are filled with fat or not. Since some people have more fat cells in different areas like the lower area of the tummy it can look bigger.

A common myth is that crunching out 100's of situps will will burn fat in that area. IT WONT!! so dont waste you time.

The simple answer is to lose more body fat! You need to increase the intensity of your cardio and ensure your in a calorie deficit

You need to reduce you Body Fat % further by measuring and monitoring
Fat loss can be achieved via diet changes (Note I didnt say diet as a diet is a temp change and leads to gaining more weight than you started with) or a combination of diet changes and excerise.

I advocate the latter as working out has many benefits than just diet changes alone. doing weight training increases lean muscle mass meaning you burn more calories and aids in fat loss

Drink water.

To lose weight be careful of potatoes. Although they are carbs they are different to carbs like pasta or rice they are processed by the body very quickly (and can lead to insulin spikes meaning fat storage. Insulin is the gateway to fat. So stay away from cakes sweets and sugars.

REMEMBER: You can get fat from eating healthy foods. Its really comes down to the following rule

Your body must use more energy than its get from the foods you consume. Even the healthy ones

Eat smaller meals ideally 6 small meals a day to keep you metabolism high. Drink lots of water and excercise at 70% of your aerobic capacity for 30-60mins 3 times a week.

Losing fat is a long term process. Fat increases over weeks and months and likewise when losing it it comes of slowly. Forget all the magazines that say quick easy weight loss because even if the diets do work they reduce muscle mass and not just fat and often are not healthy.

Search eBay for a skin folder caliper called:

Accu-measure (5-10)

This comes with a instructions on how to measure and calulate fat loss and helps you reduce you food intake until you see fat loss.

Using scales only show total weight loss and not fat loss. You dont want to lose more muscle than fat otherwise you get the "Skinny Fat Look"
Am I missing something? I dont see how measuring and monitoring your fat is going to help you loose it?
Fantastic answer by abranei, I couldnt possibly add to it.
teag1rl - This bigger bit is fat (Assuming this is not scar tissue from c-section? in which case we dealing with something completely different)

However if it is fat then people underestimate how low a persons body fat % needs to be in order to achieve a flat tummy and waist area. This bit is often the last part to go as many have more fat storage cells in this area.

Measuring and monitoring is key to see continued progress in the battle to lose fat and keep muscle. Without it you simply guess if your doing the right thing and often people go months and months getting no closer to their goals, eventually giving up with the idea that they have the wrong genes that makes them fat.
