I live in Scotland so we have had this rule for a while. The first Monday I was hurrying to work at lunch time - it took about twice the normal time due to having to dodge smokers outside pubs etc. They were wandering around with fag in one hand and mobile in the other. Pests!
What will they think up next?

its is banned in public places sue but the street is not classed as a public space,i saw nothing wrong as it was the bars, these days all have smoke extraction and the bar staff were not at any risk as far as serious heath issues are concerned people were stopped standing at the bars smoking so not to be blowing into the staff direction,i agree all food serving bars/pub restaurants etc should have smoking bans
and yes they DO look like pimps lol

Deggers, staff not at risk????
I worked in pubs where no smoking was allowed at the bar. They had extraction fans but of an evening when there are a thousand people on their with the majority of them smoking, the extraction was p1ss poor and everyones eyes would be watering from the sheer amount of smoke in there. Extraction makes it better but it certainly doesn't stop the problem.
I do agree about the walking through town, especially when you have to walk past some more choice pubs.
I am a smoker by the way.

The smoking ban applies to enclosed public spaces - so people can smoke outside despite it being public. I agree the smell does tend to linger, and it does cause a bit of crowding on the streets, but it is still better than having smoking in the pubs - just as you chose not to go in the pub, you can choose not to walk past that way, or not breath in as you pass. My main gripe is the mess they leave behind. Are smokers just dirty people? Why they think that a fag end is different from any other type of litter and can just be left or thrown wherever they feel like completely beats me.
ok then sue "enclosed" public spaces,
and regarding annie1000 saying you can choose not to walk past the pubs
has she any idea how many bars/ pubs there are in town centres i dont think i should have to cross the street half a dozen times back and forth to escape the blasted smoke.also you can never ban smoking altogether in the streets, like every type of bye law....dropping litter ,feeding pidgeons tec, there aint enough poilce or other agencies to control that.

Good thing you trendy-wendy anti-smoking little twerps weren't around when coal-burning fires in the home was common in most houses........How would you have survived? ,,,,And the fog that ensued.........And the filthy steam from the coal-burning trains......And the petrol fumes from the numerous cars and lorries. Go complain about something meaningful such as keeping knives and guns out of the hands of gang-bangas!
i was brought up in a house where we had a coal fire and with parents and older siblings who smoked. I don't deny anyones right to smoke if they want to, but i will defend my right not to be affected by it. If i wanted to kill myself by eating chocolate bars, as long as I put the wrappers in the bin where they belong, I am not causing any harm to passers by. That is the difference. Incidently, we also used to send kids up chimneys and do all sorts of other things that we have now decided aren't very good ideas any more.
daggers, you are right, I never really go into town any more though I was brought up in the city - I probably haven't been out and about much since the smoking ban was in. I still think that it is better than people smoking in pubs - not that I am in them very often - i think it is a small price to pay - if only they were not such a messy lot.
