haven't had the coil but I can highly recommend the implant. Although alot of people have problems with it I had no periods at all in 4 years! I would definitely have it put in again, only had it out cos I'm trying for a baby.
The coil can hurt for a split second as it is put in. The first 6 months can be a bit irratic with bloating, stomach cramps, moods and irregular bleeding, but after that it seems to settle and you can have five years period free. it can also control moods and pmt, but like with everything, everyone can react differently; some people don't experience any pain whatsoever as it is put in, nor do they have irregular cycles etc, while you will also hear the horror stories from others! The marina coil is usually given to women with cycle problems and heavy bleeding - is there a reason why you want the marina?
I had a coil fitted 3 years ago. When I had it done, I did find it very painful but then I have not had a baby. If you have not given birth previously then it can be difficult to fit as the cervix if quite tight. But after a few minutes it was fine and I have never regretted it. The procedure was a bit like having a smear test so you should be used to that and I have found that my periods are now non existent. I have not had anything, even a bit of bleeding since I have had it fitted. If you like not having periods then I would definately recommend having one put it. The small amount of pain that I had when it was fitted it greatly outwayed by not having a period.
in response to toby99 I was told by my doctor that she would onyl recommend the mirena as it give out the hormone. I have never had bad periods anyway but she said that the old style coil was not something that they really do anymore.

I have got the mirena and I did put on a little bit of weight at first but soon managed to get rid of it. It was the best decision that I have made.
