Yes your GP can prescribe a Statin, which reduces cholesterol. They do have side efects though. How high is your Cholesterol level?
I think you're doing all the right things. As Velvetee says, statins can help, but they can also cause liver damage and have other side effects.
Seems you have to fit into checkboxes on their computer programme beforre you qualify, I am borderline and she keeps saying if you were a point over or a year older etc?
Yes - I was going to add though, that statins can be beneficial to a lot of folk. If claybury's problem's are simply that cholesterol levls are a bit high, they can be reduced by careful diet and exercise, and no smoking or excessive drinking.
High cholesterol can occur in people of proper body weight and very healthy lifestyles as it can be hereditary (familial hypercholesterolemia) and in this case statins are the only remedy
You could try drinking Benecol or Pro-Active yoghurt drinks. They have Plant Sterols in them and are said to help along with diet. I have Pro-Active each morning and I have made the changes needed to my diet, which seems to have worked for me. Mine was down to 4.6 last time it was checked from about 6. Good Luck.
Claybury, a little more needs to be known about your cholesterol. Total blood cholesterol is made up of:
1) High Density Lipoproteins........good cholesterol.
2) Low Density Lipoproteins.........bad cholesterol.

If your HDL is high...dont worry as some experts feel that they
PREVENT heart attacks.
If you LDL is high then you MIGHT need statins.

Ask your Dr. for a breakdown of your total cholesterol levels
Sorry....simply put. your high cholesterol level may be made up mainly of HDL (good cholesterol)........now you dont want that lowering, do you?
first thing is to go and see your doctor and see what your cholesterol level is, then the doctor will decide what is best, i am on tablets but my cholesterol is hereditary, good luck
Porridge will bring it down but don't use milk or cream.
my chlorestral has come down from 5.8 -- 3.7, in a couple of months, from using simvastin.
I hope i can come off them soon now.
I did forget to say, that I havent been on any diet. I eat a big bowl of porridge every single morning with semi skinned milk. Good luck claybury
