I think you need to see a doc.
Ring nhs direct again and tell them you are still in a lot of pain.
I had appendicitis recently. With me the pain came on quite suddenly in the morning and got steadily worse all day. I was admitted to hospital in the late afternoon , they kept me overnight on intravenous painkillers and operated the next day....having said that though, everyone is different.
But if you have been in pain for more than 24 hours, you need to be seen by a doctor .
Get on the phone and don't minimise your symptoms.

An old fashioned tip. Place the tip of your little finger on the top edge of your hip bone, spread your fingers out, and place the tip of your thumb on your navel, as your other fingers are laying flat on your tummy, the middle finger lays just over where the appendix is. If the pain source of the pain is there, then it's a good indicator for appendicitis.
I had appendicitis when I was about 18, I'd had this pain all night and felt sick and shivery, anyway I decided to take the day off work and a friend rang to see if I'd like to go and see a film with her, so I agreed thinking it would take my mind off it. The next thing was I woke up in hospital on a drip, apparently my appendix had burst when I was in the cinema and I ended up with peritonitis, I ended up spending 2 months in hospital. This might frighten you your pain might have nothing with your appendix but better to be safe than end up like me. Hope you get it sorted out soon. xxx

Important.....did you tell NHS Direct, that you had pain in your stomach (abdomen) or did you say it was in your "side?"
If it was the former, then the advice given was scandalous and reprehensable. If it was the latter, then the advice was then the advice was acceptable..
I am not a fan of NHS Direct.
