Hello, my daughter in law rang me today saying she woke to find her hands were both swollen and red and painful to touch, anyone know why this should be? Thanks.

Sound like an acute arthritis which has many causes.
She needs an urgent appt. with her GP for blood tests.

Squad thanks for your answer, ive just phoned her and she tells me she went to the gp and all he said was " you wont die", what sort of answer is that???? so what now ?

Sorry sqad, spelling mistake in your name. Whoops. x
tamirra...well she won't......not of swollen hands anyway.

Would suggest that she takes NSAID's and see what happens.

So, will he see her and arrange tests?

Where is this NHS....THE ENVY OF THE WORLD.
It sounds very much as if it could be arthritis, I have that problem but my doctor got me to see a specialist at the hospital. I now have to take medication, but I at least know what it is. Saying she won't die is no answer at all. If it continues and she is not happy, she should ask to see someone else.

She has to be careful what medication she takes as she is feeding a 9 week old baby, so steroids are out, so is most medication while feeding, not really sure what shes going to do now, doubt that she will go back, there was nothing said about bloods being taken.
red palms of hands indicates liver disease.
An antihistamine might be an idea to rule out an allergy though she should check with a chemist if breastfeeding.

If it continues, definitely get it checked out further and push for a referral if needs be as some inflammatory conditions can cause damage if left to carry on untreated.

I get pain, redness and swelling on multiple joints with my arthritis. Some of the redness has never gone away over my ankles.

It took a while for me to get referred, maybe age wise being in my late twenties at the time though having other random swellings (lips and both legs) prompted them to refer me to rhumatology who are fantastic and am now on medication.

Steroids and NSAID's CAN be taken durIng lactation without harm to the newborn baby.

She needs pain relief.
condom....you are quite correct, but swelling of the hands and pain in the hands are not features of liver disease.
it could be related to her thyrpod possibly too, especially if her joints feel a bit stiff too.

She does have back problems which was passed on from her father who has PPS could it be something to do with this maybe, all her siblings have the back problem too? just a thought.
No....nothing to do with PPS.
