You have 2 sachets of white powder with water to clear you out the night before. For the procedure they inflate your stomach with air,its not too uncomfie then a very thin tube/camera goes up your bum and I promise you dont feel a thing. Your bowel shows up on a screen besides you so you can see as well. You can also ask to be sedated. The only discomfort I had was after as I was full of air and had to drink Bisodol and peppermint cordial to release the wind. Phew. You'll be lying on your side btw.
I was more uncomfortable than painful and you can be sedated for it.
I had a camera up and down and biospy done one after each other. I threw up loads of times after but for me it was the camera down and sedation as never done well on it.
The staff were fantastic and really put me at ease and when I went in I realised how many of the people are on repeat ones which made me feel better as many of them didn't have sedation so felt like a bit of a wimp haha :)
If anything it can be a good thing to have to pick up anything that needs keeping an eye on (like mammograms) as they found some polyps so will go for regular screening now to make sure all is ok and remove anything necessary.
Oh and word from the wise, don't plan on going anywhere when you have the laxatives :)

Hi sleepy1j
I had 2 procedures done 2 years ago. One was the barium, where they pump you full of wind and take x-rays, which was OK..No pain at all.
The other was the Colonoscopy where they insert the camera up around the large bowel and they took a biopsy from the intestinal wall. I did not have any sedation and did not feel a thing. Honestly. It took about 5 to10 minutes in all.

Like the previous answers say, mild sedation is usually given, and there is no pain involved.
They tell you to stay near a toilet when you have had your laxative - heed their advice! When you need to empty your bowels in the course of a day, you can hold it in because you can contract your sphincter muscles, and they will hols solid waste in place. The stuff they give you will liquidise everything in your gut, and when it's ready, it will evacuate, and you will be unable to stop it, so make yourself comfy and let nature take its course - again it's totally painless.

Can only agree with everyone else. The procedure itself is really pretty pain free.
The laxatives are jolly powerful and the vaseline tip is a good one.
I found the hardest thing was actually downing the liquid laxatives..it tastes OK if a bit sickly, but there's such a lot of it.....
You will be fine.
All the best and hope you get a good result.
