something that's only just come in to my thoughts all these years down the line ..
Thyroidectomy, is it inevitable a patient becomes underactive or a risk? Also, in the 70s, was there any alternative to that procedure? Thankyou x

Sachs.............Thyroidectomy is mainly done for hyperthyroidism (Grave's Disease), but in the 50's and 60's radioactive Iodine 131 was used, but is now only rarely used.

If you have had a thyroidectomy, then you stand the same chance of getting an underactive thyroid, later in life, as if you had not had a previous thyroid operation.

P.S Following a thread yesterday in CB there has been regret that people should ask for my opinion........!!!
correction Sqad...there has been regret that people should ask only for YOUR opinion........

apologies for capitals but we can't do italics
Robinia..correct.
oh lordy, get it right Robinia, the 'only' should really have been emphasised not the 'your'
Robinia...correct.

I'm on thyroxine sqad, I was recalled on a blood test & had my dosage lowered yet again today. It was just a thought that went through my mind whether it was inevitable or chance/ avoidable after having the op in the 70s. Incidently, my mum had the radioactive iodine treatment & she also takes thyroxine. Thanks for your reply! Take no notice!

sachs....that sounds pretty normal procedure.

Sachs....I am no fool, I know very well what that thread was all about.
Sachs I wish Sqad wouldnt take notice as it really wasnt directed solely at sqad.

I believe the post in question was only using Sqad as an example. It wasn't aimed directly at him, just at people who post FAO of a particular person.........it could be in any section, for example those that post FAO chuck in the tech section when the question could be possibly be answered by someone else equally as well and as accurately.

You think that thread meant you arent allowed to answer?? You are a fool then as it didnt mean that at all. Sorry if you saw it that way I have tried explaining in numerous threads, I give up.
My Mum had a thyroidectomy way back in about 74 / 75 .She had a goitre .She became underactive and was on medication for the rest of her life and she nearly made 92 !

"When asking a question do you ask for someone you know will know answer? Now I know sqad is brilliant at answering medical related problems but it does somewhat peeve me when posts are headed 'for sqad' Like we arent allowed to answer."

4get...read that again.........!!!!!!

daffy...but it wasn't aimed at chuck, A/C Vulcan or anybody else......it was me........and this anti-sqad campaign gas been going on for well over a year by certain people.

Ethel was a profligate poster...Technology, Body and Soul, Health and Fitness, Law, media and TV, Insurance etc and many occasions with "fao Ethel"....but no criticism there.

How come this has arisen now?..............it is obvious and I am fed up with it.
Yes sqad but you said on here there is regret that some people should ask you a question, it is not that way at all. I find it great that you can help so much what I dont agree with is asking one certain person. Not just you. Please do not take that the wrong way. Like my scabby face I asked what I should do and lots of people answered but I knew you would be around with your helpful advice. And yes they did prescribe fucidin and its nearly gone for wedding woop woop :-)

Sach dont worry no making up to do as no falling out xx
vibra was in gaming and I mentioned him too. he took it as it was meant. Now nothing more needs to be said it was all yesterday x
