Hubby rushed to hospital with breathing problems, he is a 50 something with severe diabetes [insulin injecting], problem this time was severe odema [ no Dvt] and they put him on a Ferusimide drip every day for a week, odema now under control and he feels much better, discharged from hosp and given 2 Furesimide 80mg per day, after 7 days at home GP sent him for a blood test to see how his kidneys are reacting to all this, then she phoned with the results to say come down to 40mg immediately, only drink 2 and half litres a day, salt free diet and come back for another blood test next week.
Hubby says he was once told tomatoes arent good for kidney problems and I was wondering what other foods he should avoid, all our meals are cooked from scratch no take aways etc.
any advice would be helpful.

Dee Sa....99% of the posts on Health and Fitness can be adequately answered by a 2nd year medical student or even a retired hospital porter.
Unfortunately your problem is complicated, lacks essential medical data and fits into the 1% which cannot be adequately answered on this forum.
Points:
1) He is a diabetic and his symptoms could well be due to uncontrolled diabetes or organ complications of diabetes.
2)Shortness of breath and ankle oedema may well indicate a cardiac problem.
3) Those symptoms may indicate kidney disorder either related or completely unrelated to his diabetes.
4) On discharge from hospital, a letter would be sent to his GP summing up and giving a diagnosis.
5) What was the diagnosis?
Advice:
From you inadequate, but well written post, I would advice only a salt free diet and please do not restrict any foods in your husband's diet.
Tomatoes have nothing to do with kidney problems and I cannot think of any other foods that would harm your husband........that is of course if it IS a kidney problem.
Consult your GP for a proper diagnosis.
