Has anyone got any good getting to sleep techniques?

I cant sleep and got addicted to Co Drydramol pain killers to help me sleep. I stopped taking them when I realised I was getting dependent,,so now take 2 Piriton a night,a bit less "strong".I dont want to go to the drs and get tranquillisers because I know they are addictive,but any thing that doesnt involve pills (or hot milk-eww!).I saw an article once about looking at the ceiling in a certain way for a period of time,but dont remember it.HELP!

Foods rich in tryptophan produce seratonin which will help you sleep.
The best three foods for this are turkey, cottage cheese and Montmorency cherries (juice available in Tesco).
The bizarre thing is that if you eat any or all of them to aid sleep, you must eat them within 30 mins of getting UP on a morning.
I know this all sounds weird, but it does work!

Trying to keep your eyes open for as long as you can sometimes helps. (Seriously. Get all comfy in bed then instead of closing your eyes, try to keep them open and focussed on one spot.)
Also, listening to talking book cds does it for me. Get them from the library then start them off after you get into bed. Then, if you don't sleep, at least you will be being entertained. Old familiar stories are a good bet, nothing too racy or scarey. Doing this also makes you aware of how much you do sleep , even when you think you have been awake all night....you realise that you have missed bits of the story and have to rewind.
