Worth a visit to Docs?

Today is the 3rd day my 6yr old has had a temp (up to 39). She says she has a sore throat but I can't see anything yucky in it which looks like tonsillitus. Once medicine works she is ok but not herself. I don't know whether its worth taking her to GP as they will more than likely say its a virus and won't be able to do anything. What do others think?

Why did I change my mind?.....because subsequent posts made the situation much worse than it was and rather than scare tigwig, I tried to put the situation in true perspective...................but clearly failed.

I watched it get burgled once and gave the Police a running commentary over the telephone !
Boy, were the lads surprised when they came out to find Abbey Square full of police cars ! :o)

well, it wouldn't be ab if we all agreed - I did say it doesn't sound like she has anything to worry about - I just wanted to point out that sometimes that 5 minute consultation can be really important, but we don't all have the benefit of hindsight to know when it is and when it isn't. Experience has now taught me not to take anything at face value. As a family, we still do not visit the doctor on any kind of frequent basis, but I now err on the side of caution more often. My post wasn't meant to scare tigwig in any way.

Sometimes a parent needs to be a little scared in order to act to do something, and once done and all ok....at least can say i did act on it,........ rather than did nothing.

it's only a half hour from the time you leave home to the time you get seen by the doctor and no worry for you over the weekend about your daughters health.

As i said, and just to be safe, and as it's a child as young as 6, no action or very little on Calpol intake for 3 days to reduce temp........i would go for a quick 5 min checkover no question of a doubt at all.

He refused to sell me sulphadine (sp) as I was buying too much of it. I was about 11 at the time. I think my Mums BF had a bit of an addiction..!!!

My daughter had a highish temperature for a couple of days. Took her to the doctor who admitted her to hospital with pneumonia where she stayed for 3 weeks on iv antibiotics and chest drain. Temperature usually means an infection. Best to get it checked

Glad your daughter's ok now. Must have been a terrble time for you all.

As i posted earlier, this happened to some friends of ours and pneumonia developed. Much the same that your daughter had done, was the treatment.

Best to be checked, is my opinion also in this case, for the reasons i have previously given.

Well I wasn't expecting a mass debate over this! Sqad sorry to get you into trouble :)
Anyway my daughter is now absolutely fine, she moaned a bit at lunch time but didn't have a temp (not since waking up this morning) so she had more medicine to make her feel better and its worked! She ate all her lunch for the first time and all her tea tonight so didn't bother with the docs obviously.
I think in these cases you do have to go with your instincts and I was fairly sure she wasn't drastically ill but yet as the temp was still there I wondered if she should get checked out just in case. Glad I waited now.

Just out of interest if squad looks in again, why is it that everything today is viral whereas when I was growing up it was bacterial, we were given antibiotics and felt better within a couple of days?

You are pretty popular, sqad....at least to me anyway, ( cheques payable to yogi bear please ) and know you like nothing better than a bit of cut@thrust ( at least when salla and a few other lovely ladies are about, eh?....lol ).......:0)

I'm really happy it worked out for the better, tigwig, and your daughter seems ok now........sometimes it's better to have a bit of caution, rather than waiting and with the weekend approaching and DR's surgery's closing.....just wanted your little girl to have the best care she can get professionally, just in case.

If this were say a Tuesday, or any week day when the Dr's surgery was open, i would have said to give her perhaps another 24 hours for medicine to kick in, and see if she improved, and then see what you can do regarding the doctors if she did'nt.....

I'm sure you have given her the best.... i'm just saying that sometimes they continue to be ill at the weekend and then what?.......casualty or talk to a Dr who does'nt know her history on NHS direct.

Everything isn't viral today and everything wasn't bacterial when "you were growing up".
With a viral infection you would have felt better in a "couple of days" with or without the antibiotics.
Often it is difficult to tell, whether a sore throat is viral or bacterial, but within a couple of days the answer becomes clear.

because "everything was bacterial' folk like me got given a honking dose of penecillin when the normal dose didn't work, resulting in a penecillin allergy/sensitivity reaction...massive wheals all over my body and skin peeling off my hands and feet. The doc was only doing what he thought was right at the time :-(
