As a routine check, the doctor will also probably do the infamous digital examination, which involves a lubricated gloved finger being inserted up the back passage to check for enlargement of the prostate gland. If the doctor suspects there to be a problem your friend might have a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which will tell the doctor if there's a problem. Swelling of the testes would not usually be a sign of either prostate or bladder problems anyway. The problem might be directly bladder-related, but it's best to have these things checked out, as early diagnosis can prevent future problems.
Then............
Perhaps a visit to the local hos[pital where he will first undergo a pressure check whereby a tube is inserted into the penis and liquid pumped in to determine at what point he has to go, flow rate, all kinds of stuff.
Then if needed,a camera is pushed up it too (not on same day) to internally examine it. Sounds painful but it's not too bad.

Hi Luco
Just to confirm what has been posted already re blood test rectal exam etc. I recently had my prostate removed due to cancer ( don't want to worry you though !) and ahve just finished 7 weeks radiotherapy. ANY caffeine drink is a bladder irritant. How old is your pal by the way ? - I'm 63. As a parting shot, 78% of men who die through natural causes have Prostate cancer.
Good luck to your pal.
