Last night I went to the gym about 20 minutes after I had my dinner. Someone just mentioned that doing that is really bad for you. Is this true and if so, why?

Wrong for a few reasons. Exercise will increase blood flow to the muscles being used and away from your digestive sytem causing the digestive process to slow down - Indigestion.

Alternatively, the working muscles may not get the blood flow and consequently the oxygen that they need to work effectively if your body is trying to digest something at the same time causing a drop in performance.

ah, so all in all I probably shouldn't do that again then. Thanks!
Further to the previous answer the only other effect is that you'll throw up if its really bad. I'm sure you felt a bit sick when you were at the gym.
Studies have shown that more growth hormone is released if you haven't eaten for an hour before exercise. Better to eat afterwards in the 30 minute window for rapid replenishment to your muscles.
