Yes, they're nice to watch... yada yada...

However, my poor Alfie is frightened witness and won't settle, and he can't be the only terrified animal in the neighbourhood.

Then when you consider the horrendous and irreversible injuries sustained by fireworks mishandling every year, is it time to ban them for good?

NoM, that story of the boys burnt face, just sent shivers down my spine. This is the problem, people (maybe even parents) using them and not following safety precautions and whatnot. They should be for displays only, and on the one night only. This 'three weeks' nonsense is ridiculous and unfair on animals, small children, the elderly... and generally most...

i agree with you, its time to ban them for good
Should wine be banned.

Alcohol is not good for dogs and an excess is not good for humans

Alcohol can lead to humans being frightened witnesses and won't settle, one old person can't be the only terrified human in the neighbourhood.....

Injuries (irreversible) just ask the hospitals on alcohol abuse (ok wine is only part of the available cocktail)

No like booze or wine, use of fireworks is about common-sense, a sense of self-control, responsibility and moderation....
Sorry about Alfie. Used to have a nightmare with a GSD during thunder and fireworks. Lucky here as we live in a quiet place but I think they have had their time now. Who give a damn for The Gunpowder Plot any more. Most of us would help G.F. today.
I don't have a dog, but my little budgies are a bit scared... I think.
However, I don't think fireworks should be "banned", and don't think they ever will be.
What I do think, though, is that they should only be allowed on the one night, the 5th. All this nights and nights of fireworks is, as you say, not fair on dogs... and my child who wakes up screaming!
No.
not banned, but i dont think they should be on general sale.
I don't think they should be banned, but I do think they should stop selling them to morons who think it's hilarious to put them under your open window when it's pitch black.....barstewards!
Many more people are injured each year by dogs than by fireworks so maybe dogs should be banned.
Lol Bibble :D
People are letting them off under the bridge near me making extra loud and poor wee pablo is runnin up and down stairs and up and down the room! Took him a walk and he was ok outside! But at home hes off his head! Got him two new toys today to try and occupy him.....the one that dispenses treats now and again xxxx
Only just started hearing some. Usually they are going off at least a week before. Should not be banned but only have some if your close neighbours don't have pets.
...and actually, 4get makes a good point. I also think they should not be on sale. I was in tesco earlier, and they have tons of them. I wonder how many "kids" will be mucking around with them this weekend.
I think they should probably be kept for proper displays only.
they would just be found and sold illegally - like everything else that gets banned... and there would be no safety standards, theyd be shoddily made and potentially more dangerous

you cannot ban something because it make a loud noise...

Perhaps not used in such a built up residential area?

When all is said and done, its hardly fair for any animal, domestic or wild, to be so frightened. My dog is inconsolable right now and is scratching the paintwork off the doors.

And what about the babies and young children in bed right now?
I don`t think they should be banned. I think they should be restricted to public displays and if someone wants to have some in their garden or for a special event, they should buy a (dated) licence at a fee that is enough to deter the idiots who think Guy Fawkes night lasts about three weeks.

This time last year, Bobjugs attended a five year old boy who had half his face taken away by a firework. He said he will never forget that boy's screams.
DT Crosswordfan - your comparions between alcohol and fireworkd makes no sense wnat ever. I can't hear the sound of people swallowing alcohol nightly at the rugby club near my house, but I'm pretty sure I'll hear their firework display tomorrow night!

I think apart from organised displays, the sale of fireworks should be banned - I have a problem with the cost of them, compared with their entertainment value, and the side-issue of accidents and anti-social behaviour around them.
My dogs hate fireworks and I would like to see them banned. Realistically however it would help to tightly limit days and times for their use so at least folk who needed to could take action to minimise our animals' terror. We have had fireworks at some point of every evening since Diwali.
lots of things are dangerous if mis-used... if used properly they are perfectly safe...
