OJ not sure if you are based in UK, but i have never known Boots the chemist to ask me anything, just hand over the goodies.
No, they wont ask but when your records come up as they issue a script, the PC flashes at them red if there are contraindications with any medicine.
Also the pharmacist will see what you are already taking and can see them for him/herself - they dont need to ask you anything they see it

If you buy a P medicines then you will be asked what you already take, what its for and who its for by Boots or any other pharmacy
Question Author
i am not taking anything else currently. Any number of meds have caused havoc with my stomach, hence my reticence, i am aware that is what its for, but as said zantac didn't help me before, and i took it for some time. I hadn't realised that rinitidine was one and the same.
i think em is talking about a reaction she once had to the same medication, not contraindications (althoough if you are talking about the reaction you had to omeprazole, it'll be different as om is a different class of drug)
you said you took Oruvail/ketoprofin for arthritis earlier in the thread?
Question Author
i didn't say that?
Question Author
that was tearing hair
I've found my local Boots to be excellent. Mr Alba takes a huge number of meds and if a different doc prescribes something and I take the scipt to them, and something comes up, they phone the surgery. One of his tabs is omeprazole.
Question Author
alba, had a bad bout of diarrhoea with the omperazole. It seems many meds react badly with me.
ok, I can see that now
I thought you have said it - the colours of posts confuse me (I get diff coloured posts on here)

Well I would still say the same given what I thought I was advising on

But, if all you have been scripted then yes, your GP need to look at something else to prescribe you
Did you not tell him?
That was more likely the anti b's taken alongside omeprazole
Mr Alba was also prescribed Laporoamide (sp) to counteract.

I do sometimes wonder......

They give you a tablet to help a symptom, it has side effects, therefore they give you a tablet for that and so on and so forth. Then they say that alternative medicines don't work!!
Question Author
oj, didn't know the rinitidine was zantac, i haven't picked it up from doctors yet, otherwise preoccupied.
i know only this, my insides are a lot worse, with more pain and discomfort, and that all medicines i have taken in the last three months have had a really negative effect
Question Author
i passed out yesterday, so as i said i was a tad preoccupied, not knowing why or what is causing all this.
Omeprazole is the prescription version of Zantac / Ranitidine.
Zantac / Ranitidine are the 'over the counter' version
All 3 are the same thing the active ingredient is ranitidine .
Question Author
Eddie, so why prescribe it if it's one and the same, if i already told the doctor and consultant gastroenterologist this.
Question Author
aaaghhh
Omeprazole is not the prescribed version of Ranitidine it is a different sort of drug altogether.

Zantac is the brand name for the drug Ranitidine...

The drugs of choice for reflux are now Proton Pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, lanzoprazole, pantoprazole etc

If Omeprazole didn't suit you one of the others in the family might... I take lanzoprazole for medication aggravated reflux.

Others in the ranitidine family include Cimetidine this sometimes suits people who can't take ranitidine... what side effects did you get from it though? as some of them are quite short lived and if you stick with it they go away after a few days
Doctors have to prescribe the 'generic' version of drugs now not a 'Trade name' Ranitidine is the generic name for the medication so that is what they write on the script. The pharmacist can issue any make of the drug Omeprazole is the trade name of one companies version of ranitidine. The bout of diarrhoea you suffered was almost certainly caused by the antibiotics you were given at the same time. My wife gets the same reaction to them it is very common.
Question Author
before christmas i was given by the gp an antibiotic erymycin which was for bad ear ache, sore throat, and enlarged throat glands, gave me diarrhoea, the omprezole constipation, i took it for long enough, i didn't take those two together obviously, i mentioned all this to the doctors. Zantac was prescribed over 10 years ago, and i took that for months, and after i told the doctor about feeling constipated and other things, he told me to stop it immediately. He wasn't the one who prescribed it in the first place, that was a hospital consultant.
