I was in the company of a passing acquaintance yesterday. She is 8 months pregnant and was saying her midwife had advised her to stay away from fireworks as the noise could bring on early labour.

Now, I'm all for mothers-to-be taking precautions, but she was telling us this with a cigarette in her mouth...

I had to leave the conversation as others were telling her she was right to put her baby's health first...

well there is no smoke without a fire.......but honestly, how dumb can one be.
A case of selective advice Id say

I'm an ex-smoker myself. I know if I'd fallen pregnant when I still smoked I would have quit right away.

I think the back-patting that was going on was what really got me.
OMG. Thats shocking! What is she thinking of?
//I know if I'd fallen pregnant when I still smoked I would have quit right away.//

I bet she said that once upon a time.
Presumably the midwife has offered advice about smoking as well. Strange how she's not acting on it then.
I don't know how my child survived. When I was pregnant no-one said you couldn't smoke (I was smoking in the maternity hospital), I drank the usual amount of alcohol, ate soft cheeses, pate, and liver............the daughter must be a miracle child.

It was the gaggle of women round her telling her that she was such a wonderful mum-to-be by putting her baby first that I found odd.

No-one seemed phased that she was puffing away.

I'm sure the risks of smoking during pregnancy are far more serious than watching a couple of fireworks.
And my two craft. I went of off the drink though
My doctor told me it was ok to carry on smoking, just cut down. There is no evidence that smoking harms your baby, there is evidence that alcohol can.
I don't agree with it but I guess if people aren't going to take advice then there's not much you can do... I'm not feeling so great at the moment but I'm going to go and have a ciggie in the moment which I don't imagine will help.

I can see why it might be irritating to have people saying she has done the right thing in putting the babies health first while she has a ciggie in her mouth but then if you don't challenge that then by not saying something, are you not as bad as the people who are paying lip service? Not trying to be mean, just being a bit devils advocate.

I'm not criticising anyone who smoked during pregnancy BEFORE it was discovered to be harmful to unborn babies, Craft.
Well my mother smoked when pregnant with me and it hasn't done me amy har....... mmm wait a minute :0/
i did not smoke though at first, when pregnant, as i hated the smell.... by about 6 months i was craving them and smoked about 5 a day...
Has it been discovered that it's harmful? I know they say it 'might' cause low birth weight but not much else.

I agree, CD. By not saying something maybe I was just as bad as those who congratulated her on her selfless act.

But, due to the manner in which I know her, if I had said something the fallout from it would have been on my head. To be honest, it wasn't worth the hassle.
I smoked throughout both my pregnancies.

Did I feel bad about it? Oh hell yes!

But could I stop? At the time no.

It's not escusing it, but I did cut down.
Same B00.
Snap, but I did cut down.
