Blood Sugars Down Only 1 To 13

I am a bit worried type 2 diabetic been really silly over last few weeks forgetting to take metformin and eating high sugar foods. I got a real fright friday night blood sugar 21.4 stopped eating high sugar no bad things at all since friday night and then yesterday as well as taking metformin it went down to 14. Then no bad things all day yesterday porridge for breakfast brown bread and !/2 banana 4 hours later blood sugar down to 13 a bit dissapointed because I have been really good.

My late mother was a type 2 diabetic and it was amazing the things you wouldn't expect to have sugar in. Savoury things like sandwich spread for instance. She wasn't supposed to have certain fruits like bananas and grapes as they are high in sugars. Also just looked at a can of baked beans. After beans and tomatoes, the third item listed is sugar and for a serving of half a tin, it was 12.1gm of sugar which seems a lot. Maybe you need to look more closely at labels to see exactly how much sugar there is in things.

gordie1, you do need to get yourself sorted and organised, though! I shall now frighten you by saying that my fathers "uncontrolled" diabetes led him to be insulin dependent. You really don't want it to go that way. Start taking care of yourself........you know your worth it!

Almost everything has sugar in it, a tin of peas, baked beans, even natural fruits. Being a diabetic is a whole new learning curve.Go to a diabetic clinic on a regular basis your doc should arrange this. It will put your mind at rest to learn more about your body. your sugar levels can fluctuate when you're under stress too. I Know this because I am a diabetic & have been for 35 years.

I know headwreck, I used to work with an old boy who was a long term diabetic, injecting himself 4 times a day. Once a week he used to go for a game of cards and a couple of pints with his mates and he could tell you to mouthful what he could eat or not on his card day to balance his diet, but when you're just starting it takes a bit of getting your head round. Luckily Trish has been in control of my diet for the last 12yrs since I had my stroke so I wont really have much choice once we start to get things organised.

You don't necessarily have to be Type 1 to be on insulin. My husband was Type 2 (late onset) and was on tablets for many years. Eventually he had to start on insulin, and I should tell you that it is a different ball-game altogether. If you are absolutely firm with yourself you will be able to stay on tablets. It is something you have to contend with for life gordie. It cannot be cured (well not yet) but it can be controlled. It is up to you to stay away from all things sugary and to keep to the diet you are given. There are a great many substitutes so there can be no argument. One thing though, do not be tempted to buy so-called "diabetic foods". And if you do make sure they do not contain sorbitol or you will suffer great wind pains. There are plenty of things you can eat without recourse to them.
