Ear Wigs! (another bug question)

I was also told that Ear Wigs are named so because they climb into your ear and cut open your ear drum?! Mad I know but this is what I was told. Is this true?

the first bit's true - the name comes from ear+wiggle, in Old English - the second isn't (thank goodness). In fact they seldom do crawl into ears; and the belief that they nest in your brain goes back a long time, but it's a myth.
