I had 4 crowns fitted about 11 or 12 years ago. One tooth had root canal treatment but the other 3 still have roots. (I had an accident involving an Ayrshire cow...)

Anyway, do crowns need renewed at a certain point? I'm having a bit of pain in the one without the root. I'm planning on phoning my dentist in the morning, but wondered if anyone can shed some light?

I'm hugely scared of the dentist (bless 'im, he does try!), so I don't relish the thought of having them replaced!

I'll come with you but be warned - I don't do sympathy. I will give you a sticker if you are very brave and well behaved

Crowns shouldn't need replacing unless there is a problem.
I can't understand why the one with no root is painful as tooth will have no nerves. Is the gum inflamed?
"I had an accident involving an Ayrshire cow..."

I suspect that that's more than we need to know :)

"Anyway, do crowns need renewed at a certain point?"

The most common problem is gum shrinkage which exposes the part of the tooth that is not protected by the crown.

I couldn't figure it out either, Mrs O. I wondered if maybe a tiny bit of nerve was left behind?

It's my 4 front top teeth. The gum doesn't seem inflamed, but the gum right under my left nostril is painful to touch and my tooth is throbbing.

It comes and goes though, which is even weirder. And I'm not having problems eating.

I was at the dentist for my check up only about 6 weeks ago and he didn't mention any shrikige. In fact he took x-rays and they were all clear.

But I do realise that these things can develop quickly.
In that case something is going on that needs looking at. It is the dentist for you.

BTW, how was the cow? ;-)
Could it be an abscess?
I was thinking along the same lines as psybbo.

This could be soooooo very painful....

The cow definitely was the victor in that little spat, Mrs O!

Ah, sibs, don't say that! I'm dreading it being an abscess or something else equally painful. I'm such a wuss when it comes to my teeth.
I'm the same 2sp, good luck I hope it's something simple xx
2sp - you could never ever be a wuss compared to me - I get into the dentists and immediately my whole body begins to shake.

Can you imagine how crabbit I'll be if it is an abscess? And I will share my misery with you lot.

Watch this space...
abcess 2sp, hi thee to the dentist pronto tomorrow
Question Author
It really is horrible, isn't it Conn?

I am notorious in my surgery.
Sounds like an abscess to me too. You have my sympathy!
Question Author
I could actually cry at the thought of the pain this is going to entail!

Will you lot come with me?
I'll come with you but be warned - I don't do sympathy. I will give you a sticker if you are very brave and well behaved
I am notorious too - that the last time the dentist was hurting me and he used to say to me put your hand up if you are in pain - well I put my hand up and the dental nurse shoved it down again. When I asked why did he not stop "Oh I could have hurt you" f c k you and all the rest of them. Don't care what anybody says I think dentists are after your money and are barbaric.

A sticker would be lovely.

Would you stretch so far as to hold my hand?
believe me, an abscess will be a bloody sight more painful and make you ill in to the bargain

if you want to keep your crown and not wear a denture, sort it tomorrow
You are at their mercy and they know it!
