Cuprofen
soak a small piece of cotton wool (eek) in oil of cloves. Place in the affected are and leave there. Alternatively, use a real clove. It is an acquired taste but it works.
After 30 odd years I still can't stand the taste of cloves but still use it to get rid of toothache.

Hi cymru, you really do need a dentist because the pain's telling you there's a problem that won't go away without filling or extraction. Of course, you know this anyway, but you try to forget it. However, I managed for several months on soluble asprin before I gave in and went to the dentist - and that was when they were easy to find. It was called Disprin, but I don't know whether they do it any more.

If where you live is anything like where I live, you won't find an NHS dentist prepared to take on new patients for love nor money, but good luck anyway!

Hi Cymru, just been down the same road as u, suffered for a week, took Ibuprofen and paracetamol but in the end the pain was too much, ring nhs hotline they got dental access which will get you in to see dentist at certain times, bit like a cattle market but a least it is cure and cheap at around twenty pounds, I would have paid hundred and twenty gladly.

clove oil is great, it will keep the pain away, but go to the dentist
First off get a dentist. Right now it could be a simple cavaty, but if it goes untreated you could potentially need a root canal. If it goes untreated for long enough the bacteria which are causing the problems could make it as far as your blood stream and make you very very sick.
A slightly alchoholic solution, soak a cotton ball in borbon (sp) and put it on the affected area. Also try rinsing with warm salt water to ease the discomfort.
Most importantly, GET TO A DENTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most dentistry procedures are relatively pain free these days. the injections they give, you wont even feel the injections, are fantastic. All you have to do is lie down with your mouth open and listen to BBC radio 2. yes go to a dentist.
3 ibruprofen plus 3 paracetamol always worked for me.
cotton wool with a bit of whiskey on rested on the problematic area..should get the desired effect

Hi, In follow up to  dmsjps Disprin is still widely available and I find it the absolute best thing to use! It works within minutes and stays away for 5 hours! A few doses over 3 days normally shifts it for good. I know I broke my back tooth last month and after a week of pain it has gone! Another tip for a middle of the night fix is fresh orange peel. Place on bad tooth and it will sting and hurt for 2-3 minutes and then it will fade away! A quick mouthwash with whisky/Brandy or best still Sambuca will also work wonders!
You can try clove oil for temporary relief.
