I have had some acupuncture lately and the physio has been putting the needles in manually- ie not tapping the needle, but putting it in. It's quite painful this way and I wondered if anyone else had experienced it? He also twists the needle to get it in more. OW!

how do you have acupuncture without a needle being inserted?
i know what you mean Scarlett,
i recently had acupuncture (for the 1st time) on a stiff neck, the physio that did it struggled getting the needles in as he reckoned the neck muscles were too tight/stiff, yep i felt them..Luckily i couldnt see as it was the back of my neck he stuck them in.
As a point of interest this was on the NHS..
Mine have always been tapped in................then wiggled.
My OH had treatment for a frozen shoulder a while back, made sure she was looking her best, waste of time, when she got there the Acupuncturist turned out to be a blind man.
She swears by the treatment though, great success.
forgot to mention, he actually bent the needles trying to get them in!!
I tried it twice for migranes. I counted 36 needles from my feet to my forehead & it 'king hurt....It didn't work:-(
im not convinced, bit of a last resort
I had a course of it via NHS physio recently and had three different ones during that time (physio that is), all three of them have had different ways of doing things, the last one being the most painful, them being put in and the twisting them.

I had some dry needling when seeing an osteopath some years ago and he had to yank the needle out as my muscles were so tight they didn't want to give them up.

Thanks everyone! Bednobs- the usual way of insertion is to tap the needle one and it goes it painlessly. Just feels like a flick. My physio couldn't do this for some reason- couldn't find the right places on me, so had to feel and do it by basically just pushing the needle in and twisting it to get it in deeper. Yuck! I've had three goes now and I do think it is helping with pain.
You need to get an acupuncture repair kit, maybe Halfords do them ;-)
