My wife and I have done that, in the early years of our marriage (that was in 1964). Our first Christmas away was a week in Torremolinos in a hotel. We had similar hotel Christmasses for a few years, usually abroad, then we developed an interest in hill-walking. We changed from hotels to renting cottages in remote parts of the UK and climbing every mountain in sight. The hotels were good, entertainment was provided, excursions were there if we wanted. Really, we started to go away at Christmas because I was fed up of watching my wife slaving away in the kitchen to make a good Christmas dinner for a bunch of relatives who didn't appreciate it. But it was tradition, you see! I managed to persuade her to go abroad, and that was the start of our Christmasses away from home. I can recommend it, if only because you'll have everything done for you, and no washing up afterwards!
