He will probably be having radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
He will be well looked after, but he needs to discuss his chances of getting better with his consultant (not us). However, we all wish him the best luck in the world............and we all send him our very best wishes for a positive outcome.

It is age related Miller, but over 90% of patients survive for a year and almost 70% for 10 years (during which time they may have passed naturally anyway.)

My eldest brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer when he was about 73/74 .As Shoota say it is age related .
He lived to the ripe old age of 84 ,and died from something completely unrelated to the prostate cancer .
If it's caught in time the prognosis is usually quite good .Best wishes to your pal .

"Getting better" is perhaps not the most suitable phrase to use with cancer patients. The most useful is "survival rates" and these are purely statistical, giving the %chance of living for 5 years and in some cases 3 years.If you survive more than 5 years one, for statistical purposes, is deemed to be "cured." You may live longer than the predicted %chances or you may live less.

For prostate cancer, one needs to know many things, the type of cancer, if it has spread locally or whether it has spread to distant parts of the body ( metastasized)

Without these facts nobody on AB or anywhere else, can answer your question, but your Consultant could and would.

DXT (Radiotherapy) is given as an out patient and the method and dose will vary from unit to unit but as an example one would have a 20 min session of DXT every day for five days and then a break for the weekend and this could well go on for 6-8 weeks.

This is non invasive.......no cutting or probing ;-)
