I have recieved a letter today regarding the MRI scans that I had last year. Everything appears fine although there is some wear on my spine (which I already knew!). The nerve conduction test shows changes that would be in keeping with a left thoracic oulet syndrome although this cannot be stated with certainty (copied from the letter). I have no idea what this means! Sqad, can you help please?

Kathyan....in simple terms.......this is not a diagnosis, but a description of symptoms that have many causes.

The nerves as they pass out from the neck to the arm have to run the "gauntlet" of a tunnel that is formed from tissue that is connected to the spine and the 1st rib........this tunnel contains the nerves, blood vessels and veins on their way to the arm. Normally there is plenty of room for them all, but in certain conditions, the tunnel gets a bit crowded giving symptoms in the arm........thoracic outlet syndrome symptoms.

The most commonest cause is a thickening of this band, although there are far rarer causes.

Thanks sqad. I will be going to see the consultant again, but your explanation has eased my mind a little. x
I would say that in your situation, exercises will be all that is necessary.........I look forward to any feedback.

OK, I'll keep you informed! Thanks. x
Ask for a referral to physio at your follow-up and they'll be able to point you in the right direction to improve your symptoms.
