I would have wanted to give each of them a physical talking to, I just would hope that I could restrain myself, I think I would have to have forcibly removed them from the store!!
Its a very sad world where this abuse is still actually tolerated!!

I would probably just keep quiet (to prevent said slanging match) and inform the manager that a staff member was being abused. It`s easy to sit on the sofa (as others have said) and say "I would do this or that etc" but I wonder how many people would in real life? It`s not real life though - it`s acting and I don`t see the point of it TBH
Interesting that most of those who reacted in the video were women....
Many years ago a boyfriend and I witnessed a man who was sweeping the floors in a shopping centre being tormented by some youths. Kicking his broom and sweepings.
I took his broom and challenged the lads to do the same to me....I followed them through the centre repeating my challenge....til they left.
When I asked the boyfriend why he hadn't stepped in he said he was more likely to be attacked than I was....because he was male.....
The evidence on this thread shows that men will step in regardless.....which they should....the boyfriend didn't last...wuss!
But could he have had a point....albeit a weak one?
p.s. Took me ages to find the chap to return his broom.....☺

I totally understand those who have never encountered such behaviour struggling to know how they would react.
I found it simple to answer as I have encountered it and reacted, now I am older and a bit more fragile, would I think twice? Doubt it, still would wade in and empower the ones being verbally bad mouthed.

BOO - "with all due respect andy, what you described what different. That was a racial slur. Ratter is asking what we'd do in this situation, where a person is discriminated against for their disability."
Not at all.
Discrimination is discrimination - nasty rudeness is nasty rudeness - the root cause is absolutely not the issue. Just because my abusee was abused for her ethnicity makes it no different from a person abused for their mental capacity - we are born the way we are - no-one has a right to abuse anyone because of it.

I appreciate your position - but I am five foot ten and male and I have a big, loud, seriously articulate voice, and I would wade in every single time.

I would reassure the worker that he is doing a great job, and would have confronted that customer once they left the store. I would not put the worker through more humiliation by arguing in front of him.
My aunts and uncles have learning disabilities, and have dealt with a lot of abuse in the past. I take the situation lightly in front of them, and then go back to 'politely' educate people later. I use the word 'politely' rather loosely!

jomifl - "The situation was hypothetical and contrived, pointless disussing it."
I believe you are missing the point.
It was a 'set-up' but that does not mean it does not reflect real life and real situations, which made it valid.
If the packer was dressed as Mickey Mouse and the customer was dressed as Donald Duck then fine - it's contrived. But none of the customers knew that - so as far as they were concerned, this is predjudice and abuse up close and personal - so it is a valid exercise, and a valid discussion.

Mamyalynne - "Those who are saying it doesn't count as it was a set up , miss the point - the customers who reacted or didn't were not aware of that fact.

We cross-posted, but obviously see this from the same viewpoint.
