Telling Your Wife/girlfriend They Are Fat
70 Answers
Have any of you chaps out there ever plucked up the courage to tell your wife/girlfriend that they have put on a bit of weight lately or need to loose a few pounds or even tell them they are fat? If so what was the reaction and did you live to tell the tale? If you are wondering, no I am not about say any such thing to my wife but I know someone who did drop a hint that his wife was getting podgy, didn't go down too well.

It did not draw a favourable reaction but when he then added that she should dye her red hair blonde and wear more makeup to cover her freckles he was after a two year relationship dumped before the sentence was cold.
On a similar vein, I have a very good friend who cannot keep weight on for health reasons. She is painfully thin and wants nothing more than to put some meat on.
Yet, people think it's ok to say to her that she is getting far too thin, that she really needs to beef up.
She knows this! It really hurts her when people comment.
Why say things that are more than likely to upset or offend?

I never make comments about peoples' appearance- good or bad. When I see my friend after 6 months of her being abroad, I don't say she looks fat or thin, tanned or light, healthy or ill. I don't say if I like her hair, her dress or her bag. I really don't notice these things- I just see the person. My Mum is weight obsessed and she recently congratulated someone she knew in the supermarket for losing lots of weight- and he told her he has terminal cancer. Really- who cares what someone looks like?! If you love them, you love THEM, not the package they have arrived in.
