Neurothapy In Feet

Here's a question for Sqad but also anyone else. For 5 years I've had tingling and numbness in the soles of my feet- constantly and equally. It is very painful to stand and walk. I also have arthritis and have had ulcerative colitis which is in remission. It struck me today that perhaps the pain and sensation in my feet could be caused by the only medicine I take- Omeprazole for a hiatus hernia. I think I started to take it around 2010 after having really awful indigestion when I couldn't eat anything without pain. I'd like to maybe stop taking it to see if it affects my feet but- are there any dangers of stopping it, and how long would I have to stop it for to see if it made a difference? I also have slipped discs and will soon be having a caudal epidural to see if it reduces pressure on a nerve that could possibly be pressing a bit. has anyone else had this side effect with Omeprazole?

The British National Formulary entry for Omeprazole directs reader who are seeking information about opossible side effects to the entry relating to all such proton pump inhibitors. That, in turn, states: "Less frequent side-effects include . . . paraesthesia, arthralgia, myalgia . . . ", all of which seem to relate to the information in your post.

So the possibility of a link between your use of Omeprazole and the symptoms you experience presumably can't be ruled out.

Stopped taking them over 1 year ago,too many problems like yourself also,many toilet problems as well,never had any bother since.

I'm interested in any comments on your question, Scarlett, as I also have numbness of the feet and a little difficulty with walking and balance; however, I do not take Omeprazole.

JD, I just knew someone would say that:) However, I THINK it stems from a spell of sciatica from about three year ago. Which, incidentally, I haven't experienced again.

If you think that it may be causing your symptoms, then certainly stop the omeprazole, watch and wait.........a fortnight should give you the answer.
No dangers in stopping them, apart from your gastritis returning.

You have many reasons for having peripheral neuropathy as it is associated with Arthritis, Ulcerative colitis and certainly diabetes ( I am not sure if you suffer from this). Proton pump inhibitors are known to cause neuropathy, but very unusual and way down the list of causes.

I would have thought a better answer would be forthcoming after your epidural........

Thanks everyone. Sqad - out of curiosity I didn't take any last night or this morning and have been more able to stand and walk on my feet today, with less pain. But I also find that if I don't eat dinner the night before, and fast, I have less pain generally. So it could be that. I have had to eat REALLY slowly though, even slower than normal, for fear of pain and indigestion, and my speaking voice feels laboured and a bit husky so maybe the acid did get me in the night :(

Sqad- I managed 3 days without Omeprazole, and ended up with constant heartburn, sick in my mouth on waking, a lump in my throat when I swallowed, and pain when I swallowed. I took 20mg of Omeprazole and it went away. I'm not having acid wreck my throat! I did feel a lot more energetic without it though, and had less pain in my feet, although still a lot of pain. I wonder if there is anything like Omeprazole which is different I could try?

There's Lansoprazole, but I'm guessing that'll cause same problems :(
