Human Hair Balls!

'They' say that everyone has an amount of hair that has been accidentally swallowed or whatever inside them, like people who chew their hair etc have balls of hair in their stomachs... I hope someone knows what I'm on about.  My question is - How come these 'hair-balls' don't just pass through? 

(The thought arose because I think like I have a hair stuck in my throat)
