Sandyroe - normally a 'surgical extraction' will involve bone removal in order to gain purchase on the root frament and to facilitate a path of removal. The area of bone removed is called alveolar bone and it is this part of the jaw bone that supports the teeth. Following tooth loss, this alveoalar bone will shrink away naturally (as the body thinks it now serves no purpose as the tooth is not there) so having bone removal, although not pleasant, is not usually a major issue as it will be lost anyway. Having said that, dentists will try to avoid bone removal wherever possible.
