Hi, I've suffered from cystitis on and off over the past week, for no obvious reason to me. I've had it before but only very rarely and it's never lasted more than a day. In the past hour there has been a dull pain in my right kidney which feels rather uncomfortable. I'm young (21), fit (ish!) and have a healthy diet and have no idea what has brought this on, can anyone offer any remedies? I'm drinking cranberry juice and lots of water, and the doc's closed now until monday.
Thanks

Banth,

Quite simply don't mess around waiting, take it to your local NHS centre(you know the ones i mean where they check you out when your doctors shut) where they can getr you checked out and referred to a hospital if there is any concern.

Thanks, my nearest one is 28 miles away so I'll have to ask someone to drive me there on the weekend. I've had a look on the website and I hope they can help. I guess I'll just have to take some asprin and moan 'til saturday!

Banth,

Surely yo have someone close who can take you tonight or the latest tomorrow, if not pop into your local hospital a&e(irrespective of how far you are from it), jeez where are true friends when you need them

hi Banth - working for a Dr's out of hours, I can tell you the last place you want to go is to A & E.  Ring your Dr's number and there should be two numbers on the answerphone - one NHS Direct and the other the Dr's out of Hours  you can call either, but it might be advisable to ring the dr one.  If they feel you need to be seen they will recommend you attend one of their clinics and you can see an out of hours dr there who will probably ask for a water sample to test.  Probably need antiboitics and they will prescribe somne for you and should give you some for this evening.  Bit strange your dr is not open tomorrow though unless they had to close for other reasons,  Good Luck hope you feel better soon.

My doc's is open tomorrow there is just absolutely no way of getting there. Thanks for the advice normally I'd go tonight to an nhs centre but my partner is working late and I've just moved to a new area so there is noone here to take me. Poor old me, eh!

Thanks for all your advice, I'm running a nice hot bath in the meantime.

Hi there,

Im 22, I've been getting urinary tract infections a lot lately (I've never had them before) and this time round it's turned into a kidney infection and I've had it bad for three weeks now. My doctors have not been too helpful-firstly they prescribed anti bs over the phone without be coming in for a check up, they haven't been working so had to go bck and get some more. I've done urine samples and they've come bck as infected and as I've been getting it a lot-I had to say to them can I be referred as I keep having to take a lot of time off work. I've got an ultrasound in two weeks but my right hand side too is absolutely killing me and the anti bs still don't seem to help-not sure if I should go bck to drs cuz they don't seem to take it seriously. I would advise you go to an NHS walk in centre asap (if you have one) before it turns into a kidney infection and they will test your urine and from your symptoms should prescribe some anti bs. I hope you get better soon and don't end up of having if for ages like me!
don't give up banth.  do you have a late night opening tesco or asda, sainsbury near you with a chemist in it?  They can sell you over the counter medicines.  Along with some Lemon Barley water which will help.  take care and good luck

I empathize with you I have a rare form of cystitis (interstitial).

the best advice I can give you until you can see a doctor is lie down putting  your feet up it reduces the pressure on the bladder.     A hot water bottle helps.                                     A teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a cold drink reduces the uric acid in the bladder.     I find a pint of weak tea helps.                           It takes 45 minutes for drink to reach the bladder so you have to be patient.                    meanwhile don't eat anything high in salt or alcohol or rough sex as these exacerbate the condition.

Some women appear more prone to this afflicyion than others. Just to chip in with some advice on prevention, rather than your immediate need of a cure (heed advice to get it seen to ASAP): Wipe the front from the front, wipe the back from the back (i.e. reach around to the behind). Pass urine, no matter how little, as soon as you can without spoiling the moment after intercourse, to be doubly safe also after stimulation of any kind. Wear only natural fabric (i.e. cotton or other, not synthetics including tights) next to genitals. These three simple habits could keep you free of cystitis for the rest of your life.
